New Giant Steps - Magical Pure Pinots and Shimmering Chardonnays

    Giant Steps
    Yarra Valley

The baton pass from Steve Flamsteed to new winemaker Mel Chester is now complete, and her debut solo vintage has come up nothing short of outstanding! The wines are beautiful, the philosophy (a search for site to glass transference via minimal and thoughtful intervention) is inspirational, and the value is impressive. It's just a shame that quantities are so tiny in this incredible vintage - don't miss out!
    Cheers, Randall
“Our 2022 single vineyard wines have wonderful power and density - the chardonnays are compact and textured, and the pinots have such fruit purity, really speaking clearly of their sites. One of the seasons for the history books.“ – Winemaker Mel Chester

    Giant Steps 2022 Sexton Chardonnay
    RRP: $80 | Offer: $74

"The most immediate of the four single-vineyard chardonnays from Giant Steps in 2022. Perfectly ripened white peach and apricot aromas with scents of German spiced biscuits and a little flint. Textured with good intensity, this silky wine flows effortlessly across the palate." 96pts - Phillip Rich, Halliday's Wine Companion
"This is an exceptional, mid-weighted chardonnay... Vanilla pod oak provides direction. Taut and seamless. Lemon curd and roasted quince, nestled amidst creamed cashew, nougatine and truffle at the core. The finish is endless, joining a matrix of textural rivets and seams, underlain by the flavorful Gingin clone. With wines such as these it is little wonder that Australia boasts the finest expressions of chardonnay with Burgundy. Drinkable now, but best from 2025." 96pts! - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com

     Giant Steps 2022 Applejack Chardonnay

    RRP: $80 | Offer: $74

"This is the other leader of the pack, with the Sexton Vineyard. Wow! A near-vertiginous site in the Upper Yarra, underlain by basalt. Tighter, compact and nervous. Wild fermented, albeit, without the subtle application of malolactic that softens the other expressions. Perhaps a little less complex in its youth as a result, despite its mid-weight. As with all of these wines, the oak handling is exceptional. A lesson for others. Pistachio, curry leaf, lime blossom and vanilla accents jitter long. This will age exceptionally well, at which point the wine may be deserved of another point." 95pts! - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com

Giant Steps 2022 Wombat Creek Pinot Noir
    RRP: $90 | Offer: $84

"Soft, beautifully perfumed and silty of texture. The structural latticework is looser and more reliant on a skein of juicy freshness over any significant tannin. Silky and svelte. Barely mid-weighted of feel, such is the ethereal aura. Lovely tangy length. Red mountain berries, bergamot and cranberries. A wine to pique the curiosity of the versed drinker as much as one new to the variety. Drink or hold, but really this is such an enticing proposition that it is hard to resist immediately." 93pts - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com

Giant Steps 2022 Applejack Pinot Noir
    RRP: $90 | Offer: $84

"Given the cooler conditions, much of the whole-bunch quotient has shifted to whole berries. Still, 20%. The semi-carbonic approach exudes floral perfumes, red to blue pastille, red apple skin and rosewater. Mid-weighted, sappy, nicely crunchy and joyous. An earlier drinking wine in the context of the site. Really delicious. Drink or hold." 94pts - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com

Giant Steps 2022 Applejack Pinot Noir
    RRP: $90 | Offer: $84

"Aromas of clove, bing cherries, lilac and mulch. A darker composition. A carnal whiff of autumnal leaves and Lapsang souchong. Detailed tannins compress a mid-weighted palate of impressive density and freshness. This will unravel nicely across the mid-term, based on poise and succulent length. A reductive clench at the finish confers further tension." 95pts! - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com

Giant Steps 2022 Primavera Pinot Noir
    RRP: $90 | Offer: $84

"Wonderfully perfumed and vibrant with its aromas of cranberries, wild strawberries, a little Sichuan pepper, fresh citrus oil and musk roses at dusk. A wine of exquisite finesse and excellent depth, the tannins are very fine and long, as is the finish. This will provide much enjoyment over the next decade or so." 97pts! - Philip Rich, Halliday's Wine Companion
