The "Best Ever?" 2021s from Rebholz, Prinz & Wagner-Stempel

    Weingut Rebholz
    Pfalz, Germany

    As Daniel Wagner of Rheinhessen GG fame said whilst we were tasting in his cellar earlier this year;
“In 15-30 years’ time people will still be talking about these 2021’s!”
Here we have some of the first 2021s to arrive in Australia. I visited all three of these rockstar producers earlier this year and I can whole-heartedly confirm that this is a stupendous vintage.
All wine-lovers should taste some now to experience the greatness; and also have some in their cellar.
It’s a vintage of great ripeness, low pH, perfect acidity, huge extract with rarely seen drive, finesse and balance.
All three estates here are organic - with Prinz & Rebholz also practicing biodynamics - and take great pride in harvesting only perfectly ripened and healthy, tiny riesling berries.
These three great estates on offer here are “wine royalty” and represent the very cream of the crop of three great regions: Rheingau, Pfalz and Rheinhessen. I’ve always loved and had a special respect for what I call the opulent and exotic wines of Rebholz (don’t get me wrong, they have firm and cleansing acidity and structure too). I met Hansjorg and the “electric” Brigit Rebholz about 6 years ago, and have been desperate to visit ever since. In March Hansjorg took me to see the family’s wonderful, elevated sloping Grand Cru sites, mostly grouped together under the protection of the Haardt Mountains to the west. The greatness of GG sites of Im Sonnenschein, Ganz Horn, and Kastanienbusch have to be tasted to be believed, and much of these are “downgraded” to village and estate also! Many of our readers already know of the power and greatness of Prinz and Wagner, what more can I say, except that
there has never been better from these producers!
    Cheers, Randall
"If you want to understand the type of a vintage or even the taste of soil types in wine, Rebholz is and remains a first address… The wines are always graded down from the top, so that the village wines are de facto once-graded crus, the so-called estate wines twice-graded crus. The family domaine no longer has any simple sites anyway. All plots of the total of 26 hectares of biodynamically farmed vines (Respekt certification) are located in the best sites and vineyards ... Not much has changed here since the twins Hans and Valentin Rebholz moved in a few years ago, at least not with the Riesling. The Rebholz style seems untouchable, and that's a good thing."

    RRP: $71 | Offer: $64

From GG sites, declassified. "Effusive citrus and pear aromas. Sleek and crisp, but the ample fruit is more than enough to integrate the acidity. Zesty citrus finish with impressive depth." 91pts - James Suckling

2021 Rebholz Riesling Siebeldingen 'vom Buntsandstein'
    RRP: $109 | Offer: $98

    LIMITED
A blend of plots in Siebeldingen from red sandstone soils.
"Complex nose of white peach, white currant, herbs and a touch of flint. Sleek, but highly structured with a razor-sharp minerality and lots of energy. Very long, super-clean and bone-dry finish. Use as you would a high-end Chablis." 93pts! - James Suckling

2021 Rebholz Riesling Burrweiler 'vom Schiefer'
    RRP: $109 | Offer: $98

    LIMITED
A blend of plots in Burrweiler from black slate soils.
"Effusive nose with a whole garden of fresh herbs, also some delicate stone fruits. Stunning minerality on the very focused and light-footed palate. The acidity at the properly dry finish may be a bit challenging for some, but we find no hint of unripeness there, rather we find it invigorating and excitingly stony." 93pts! - James Suckling

2021 Rebholz Riesling Siebeldingen 'vom Muschelkalk'
    RRP: $109 | Offer: $98

    LIMITED
A blend of plots in Siebeldingen from marine fossil-rich limestone soils.
"A remarkably generous, dry riesling for this cool and high-acidity vintage. A whole basket of stone and citrus fruit plus yellow apple with a whiff of smoke. Creamy mid-palate, then a very chalky texture at the long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification." 93pts! - James Suckling

    2021 Rebholz 'vom Muschelkalk' Weisserburgunder
    RRP: $115 | Offer: $103

    LIMITED
"Plenty of candied lemon and a touch of lemon curd on the nose, but the aromas are still unfolding, so a little patience will bring a great deal! However, this has a very sensual creaminess that doesn’t make it feel one jot too fat, much less heavy. Wonderfully delicate long finish with super-solid tannic foundations." 94pts! - James Suckling

2021 Rebholz 'Ganz Horn' Riesling GG
    RRP: $249 | Offer: $199

    LIMITED
"Stunning interplay of intense wild herb character with pear and white currant aromas. Very compact structure with plenty of fine tannins wrapped around the crystalline core. Really needs some time for all of this to fully harmonize, but there’s no doubt about either the concentration or the vitality. Very long, quite austere finish." 95pts! - James Suckling

2017 Rebholz 'Ganz Horn' Riesling GG
    RRP: $249 | Offer: $225

    LIMITED
"At once ripe and generous at the front, yet austere and radical at the finish, this is a super-straight and mineral wine that needs some time to give its best." 97pts! - James Suckling

2021 Rebholz 'im Sonnenschein' Riesling GG
    RRP: $225 | Offer: $199

    LIMITED
"The 2021 Im Sonnenschein Riesling GG offers a pure, dense and aromatic nose with notes of crushed limestone, herbs, citrus fruits and mocha beans. Round, lush and savory on the palate, with very fine, crystalline acidity, fine tannins and sustainable salinity, this is a full-bodied, rich and complex, even powerful but always juicy, elegant and refined Riesling with enormous substance and saline terroir expression. This is based on the fruit of Rebholz's oldest vines, which were planted in 1961. Basket-pressed. Good punch." 96pts! - Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

    2021 Rebholz 'Kastanienbusch' Riesling GG
    RRP: $249 | Offer: $225

    LIMITED
"This smells like breaking open a beautifully ripe passion fruit! The palate of this great dry riesling has a very sleek silhouette, but an enormous amount of complex minerality (think every shade of rock from red to black) packed into it. Like a tight rosebud that needs time to unfurl its tightly folded beauty." 97pts! - James Suckling

    2021 Prinz Riesling Hallgartner Hendelberg
    RRP: $72 | Offer: $65

This is an Erste Lagen (1er Cru) site, set back from the Rhein River and elevated so the nights are cold and the days warm and sunny. The ripeness and acid retention of the site, with the old vines give a wine that can equal the GG sites says Fred Prinz.

If you wonder why you should take the Rheingau seriously here’s a very good reason. Deep and complex nose of licorice, Amalfi lemon and white peach. Highly structured, with tons of crushed-stone character on the compact and crisp, medium-bodied palate. With a bit of aeration the peachy side of this wine expands and expands in the glass! From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 95pts - James Suckling

    2021 Wagner Stempel Riesling 'Porphyr'
    RRP: $75 | Offer: $59

"Very bright nose of white peach and lemon zest, together with delicate notes of wild flowers and herbs. Sleek and elegant, but with stacks of stone fruit and citrus and a compact core, this has a wonderful interplay of hardcore minerality and juicy fruit. Very long, ripe and firm finish. From organically grown grapes." 94pts - James Suckling

2021 Wagner Stempel Riesling Hollberg GG
    RRP: $129 | Offer: $109

"An explosion of peach, apricot, mandarin orange and flint. Stunning concentration of ripe fruit and beautifully supported by super-fine tannins and super-sensual, mineral acidity that propels the extremely intense and long crushed-stone finish. From organically grown grapes." 97pts! - James Suckling

2021 Wagner Stempel Riesling Heerkretz GG
    RRP: $165 | Offer: $139

"As delicate as a bunch of chamomile, yet as focused and powerful as a laser beam, this is a super-cool and mineral dry riesling that packs enormous depth into a sleek silhouette. Still extremely young and just beginning to show its real class. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024." 96pts! - James Suckling
