    Top-Scoring Aussie Reds

It's hard to believe how great these wines are, especially for the prices (I know it sounds like promotional puffery!) but these are truly great vintage marques from famous and classic wine craftspeople. I find it hard to describe the pleasure and pride in Australian wine that these super quality wines give me. They are not just deserving of their lofty scores, but they are classy and powerful examples truly deserving of their benchmark reputations.
    Cheers, Randall

"From a 3.2ha block of shiraz, planted in 1973. Half was fermented with 20% whole bunches in one 3,500L old oak cask, pressed and returned to this cask to mature for 12 months. The other half was matured in puncheons for 12 months. A very bright, medium crimson purple. A riotous amalgam of aromas including blueberries, potpourri, licorice root, Szechuan pepper and caraway seeds. Medium bodied and elegant, this has terrific viscosity and the tannins are oh, so powdery and fine. Gorgeous now and over the next 10 years or longer." 97pts! - Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

    Craiglee
    Sunbury, Victoria

Craiglee is one of Australia's finest producers, but constantly flies under the radar. A great thing for fans and those in the know, as it has resulted in some of Australia's finest and most unique shiraz remaining somewhat available, and more importantly, incredibly reasonably priced. I remember John Brown Sr (of Brown Brothers) telling me many years ago that he was so impressed by a hundred-year-old bottle of Craiglee that he convinced a young Pat Carmody, an agricultural science student working his family farm on the site of the old vineyard, to replant vines at the site. Fast-forward to today, and the ever so laconic, but razor sharp Pat is still making wine from estate-grown, hand-picked fruit in the same bluestone winery built over 150 years ago. If one is looking for a definitive example of Victorian shiraz, look no further.  Randall

    2019 Craiglee Shiraz
    RRP: $67 | Offer: $56

"If Pat Carmody can’t make great shiraz, then we should all shut up shop. He’s only been doing so at Craiglee for, oh, about 40-plus years. There's a DNA imprint to this, with a whorl of dark fruit, warm spices shot through, cedary oak and wafts of red roses. Very savoury though, fuller bodied with archetypal Craiglee tannins supple, shapely and ripe. Yes, a lovely wine made by a legend." 96pts! - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

    Rob Hall
    Yarra Valley, Victoria

Rob is a winemaking gun with considerable experience in the Yarra Valley, previously having worked at Mount Mary and Kellybrook. He acquired the vineyard on his childhood property planted by his mum Harriet in 1996 (the wine is labelled as Harriet's Vineyard today), and he has since gone on to lease other vineyards across the valley. His deep experience and connection to place allows Rob to produce wines of immense character and style, while always remaining on the cutting edge of winemaking. These wines are seriously under-priced for the quality!

2022 Rob Hall Harriet's Vineyard Pinot Noir
    RRP: $47 | Offer: $42

"From the 1996-planted Harriet's vineyard in Healesville; 20% whole bunches, 50/50% matured in one- to three-year-old puncheons and seasoned hogsheads. A medium crimson ruby. Aromas of strawberries, satsuma plums, lightly poached rhubarb and a little potpourri. Still quite tightly wound, there's a lovely core of red and black fruits on entry before the compact and sturdy tannins kick in on the finish. The most backward and age-worthy of Rob Hall's trio of excellent single vineyard pinots from 2022." 95pts! - Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

2022 Rob Hall Gladysdale Pinot Noir
    RRP: $47 | Offer: $42

"From the Willowlake vineyard in Gladysdale; 70/30% fully destemmed/whole bunches and matured in seasoned puncheons. Bright ruby red. Lifted and perfumed with aromas of red fruits, tangelo, pink peppercorns and some delicate floral notes. Elegant and supple with super-silky tannins before finishing energetic and long." 96pts! - Phillip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
