Iconic Chianti

Tasting these wines in the office, we were struck by their individual class and character. The Isole was a delicate wine, very perfumed and ready to go right out of the bottle. This is textbook Chianti from a classic vintage - ripe and grainy tannin, with a savoury edge under the fruit, and mouth-watering, refreshing acid. There is a reason these wines have for decades been reference points for the entire appellation. The 2019 Chianti Classico was lauded - James Suckling gave it 93, and both Wine Enthusiast & Decanter gave it 94 - and at least according to Antonio Galloni the 2020s are looking even better. The Antinori in its typical style is a wine built for ageing - there is more oak, more tannin, and greater concentration here. But even in its (relative) youth it is foreshadowing what is to come: a thoughtful, darker Chianti singing with a sweet perfume of dark cherries and sour plums. This will generously reward time in the cellar.
