In an article titled “In Search of Burgundy Bargains” Jancis Robinson cites Epineuil as a place to look harder at, especially with the recent warmer vintages; wise words I think. This wine comes from a 1.2Ha plot of old vines on the best slope of the area, akin to the best gentle slopes of the Cote d’Or. Called the Cote de Grisey, this famed slope has a near-perfect S-E exposition, and the wine is named after Dominique’s first daughter. He says it’s made with “care and rigour” using 100% whole-bunches. It's a deeply coloured wine with resonatory and complex aromas; and flavours and body showing that it comes from well-ripened and low-yielding grapes. In fact, the whole-bunch / stemminess is not dominant, nor is the oak, such is the seemingly hidden but inherent power and velvet richness of this wine. The silky but firm tannins have been melded into the wine over the 15-month ageing in barrels (10% new), but this is a baby and could use 5 years to settle a little, however, bring on some food and this can be broached now. It’s a dark fruit, i.e. ripe vintage but it hasn’t lost the rose-petal and berry compote nuances of a classy wine. For us, this wine for this money was a revelation in terms of interest and quality. I think that you will be amazed!
