On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and fleshy, with ripe but racy acids, fine depth at the core and a long, sapid finish. This magical blend comes from (40%) Le Mesnil Champ d'Alouette site and (60%) Ambonnay Grand Ruelles, both of course, great and classic Grand Crus. Theophile detailed and impeccably polished cuvee. It combines the complex minerality given from the Ambonnay site with the rich and concentrated expressiveness of Champ D'Alouette beautifully. With extended oak contact this champagne is an expression of mastery.

2007 Gonet-Medeville Champagne Grand Cru Champ d'Alouette

100% from the Champs d'Alouettes vineyard in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, a single Grand Cru 100% chardonnay site of 4ha. It's a "bull's eye" plot that gives the classic powerful, minerally but also the deep and profound flavours that make Le Mesnil so famous. Xavier ferments and ages the wine in older barrels for 6 months, blocks the malo, and then this rare wine sleeps in the bottle for 13 years! It is usually blended for Cuvée Théophile and is only ever vinified separately in the very best vintages - under 100 dozen are usually made. Gonet-Medeville and Krug are the only two houses to own vineyards in this site! It's low in dosage (around 2.5g/L), which is perfect because of the aged brioche, honey, biscuity and lemon curd characters with intense minerality. This is a searingly powerful and profound wine!

Herbal and so stony that this wine in your mouth feels like scrambling down the scree of a windswept mountain in cold rain, clutching on herbs and wildflowers to brake the fall, with a view of an achingly deep valley beneath. Broom-blossom honey in the air, struck stones smoking in the mist. The taste of old gold and quarries in the rain. Wide, owning finish.
