"I have done 21 harvests, and 2019 is one of the most complete and balanced vintages." – Eugenio Palumbo, winemaker at Vietti.
"Growers are calling 2019 a classic vintage...primarily based on the delayed start and mid-October harvest, patterns not seen in the three vintages that preceded 2019, nor in the years that have followed it" - Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator.

    Giacomo Brezza

Coming from within the spiritual and geographical center of the Barolo commune, the Cannubi Cru is home this producer and its 4th generation, Enzo Brezza. A very traditional and organic (always the ethos, certified since 2014), these wines see long ferments, maceration and time in large Slavonian botti (casks). These wines are wonderfully perfumed with softer, more approachable tannins compared to communes found further south and east.

    Nervi-Conterno

Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, but due to its size and historical inaccessibility to the market, has largely been a region just for those in the know. Roberto Conterno (of incomparable Giacomo Conterno fame) was certainly one such insider, whose admiration of this tiny region led him to purchase the original producer in Gattinara, Nervi.
The vintage Gattinara, effectively the classico, is comprised of 4 key plots, Cassace, Garavoglie, Molsino and Valferana.  The wine is fermented and macerated in steel at controlled temperatures, for 20 to 30 days, followed by 30 months in large wood. The two cru come from Valferna and Molsino and are fermented in large conical wooden vats for a similar 3-4 weeks and then aged for another 40 months in large boti. These two crus are only produced in good vintages.

    Tenuta Montanello

Sitting right in the middle of Castiglione Falletto, Montenello is superbly sited. At an altitude of 250 - 300 metres,  Montanello is considered to be one of the best crus of the Barolo area, as confirmed by Renato Ratti's Map of Barolo. Mostly south and south-west facing, with a consistent soil profile of calcareous clay and the classic blue tufa sand. 5th generation winemaker Alberto Racca and his sister, Maria Pia and Cristina, own 100% of this cru (!), and take a low-key approach with Barolo being fermented in steel and aged for 1 years in Allier barrels (30% new, followed by a year in large botti. These wines are unforced and authentic.

    2021 Montanello Langhe Nebbiolo
    RRP: $48 | Offer: $39

The vines of this Nebbiolo are about 30 years old. It's a heavier style of Nebbiolo, more blue fruits but still plush and carrying notes on violets and roses in the bouquet.

    2019 Montanello Barolo
    RRP: $102| Offer: $86

The Barolo is aged for three years (as required by the DOCG specifications), of which the first two is in oak barriques from France (Allier forest). The wine is then rested the bottle for at least 6 months before release.
