Note too that beyond the celebrated Estate and special cuvees, the '1314' collection deserves serious attention. Sourced exclusively from the estate's own vineyards, these wines deliver remarkable quality at an impressively accessible price point.
It's no great secret that my eldest son Gus works at Bannockburn, so there is a "connection". I do get to hear about the "workings" and some trials and plans; pleasures and pains. So I am acutely aware that in recent years there has been a more intense desire for improvement, and great strides with quality increases.
Perhaps I shouldn't write this, but when Gus was over a year ago I sneakily poured him some 2023 Bannockburn Chardonnay (he didn't see this), then I put another bottle on the bench (he couldn't see the label, but the capsule clearly looked French) and I gave him the glass. He picked it as a 1er Cru Meursault!
Now don't get me wrong, he has a great palate usually, but the power of suggestion, the somewhat "French-like" style and the great quality of the chardonnay swayed him!
We still have a little of the 2023's left, bur these new 2024's are a must-taste for any wine-lover! Cheers, Randall.
