    Wagner-Stempel
    Rheinhessen, Germany

The Wagner Stempel vineyards, in picturesque Siefersheim (about 1 hour SW of Frankfurt), are situated across porphyry / granitic soils that - indeed an old porphyry quarry is next-door. They are uniquely placed in a cool microclimate, with sunny slopes to produce wines of exceptional minerality, character, and age-worthiness. Daniel Wagner does his best to let the terroir of the GG wines speak - and believes that Riesling of all varieties is uniquely placed to capture and express this terroir. He judiciously uses crushed fruit / maceration before pressing, then fermentation and ageing in a mix of large barrels and steel tanks.

    2022 Wagner-Stempel Riesling GG Hollberg
    RRP: $139 | Offer: $126

"The first thing that strikes you is the huge stone fruit ripeness in the nose, but then comes the striking exotic fruit and herb freshness, and when you take the first sip the wet stone intensity and vibrancy are truly staggering. Breathtakingly brilliant mineral finish that’s austere in the best possible way. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025." 98 points - Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com

    2022 Wagner-Stempel Riesling GG Heerkretz
    RRP: $175 | Offer: $159

"Still very young, but with a combination of great concentration, great tension and great minerality, this incredible dry Riesling marries all of this with an astonishing gracefulness. With aeration in the glass aromas of a wide spectrum of exotic fruits, curry leaves and Thai basil develop. In spite of this extravagance on the mid-palate it is a prima ballerina standing en pointe. So pure and precise at the super-salty mineral finish you can’t resist. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 99 points - Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com

    2022 Wagner-Stempel Riesling EMT
    RRP: $675 | Offer: $609

This is the best bunches from the best vines in the 1.5ha plot making just one tiny tank, 360 bottles. It's exceptionally long and is the purest expression of the great Heerkretz grand cru.
"EMT is not a code nor is it an abbreviation. It is the name of a neighboring family of winemakers from whom I purchased a very special vineyard in 2001. At the time, it was one of the very few old, planted parcels in the still mostly fallow Heerkretz cru. In total, more than 6 acres of vineyards comprise this piece in the central and most exposed area of the entire site. It is the heart of the VDP.Grossen Lage Heerkretz and basically a grape selection of this core area that I am putting together for the VDP auction. A wine to show the quintessence of Riesling in this particular slope. A cool elegance and filigree in appearance yet full of tension, ripe power and salty minerality." - Daniel Wagner
"The Riesling EMT is, as every year, the most uncompromising wine of the "Wagnerian Collection", and as so often before, this exceptional wine presents itself very closed in its youth. The nuances that slowly emerge from the glass always remain subtle and delicate, typically showing peach and citrus notes. In addition, there are floral tones reminiscent of jasmine. On the palate, the EMT builds powerfully with enormous pressure and impressive tension. Overall, however, it always remains precise. and it has an interplay between a restrained yellow-fruity style, iodine-salty minerality, concise but juicy acidity and a finely honed tannin framework. Also typical of the EMT is the cooling menthol freshness that provides the final kick on the finish." - Romana Echensperger MW

    Von Hovel
    Mosel, Germany

The 21-hectare Von Hövel estate operates out of a manor house that was completed in the 12th century, where it initially served as an abbey retreat for the famous wine monastery of St. Maximin in Trier. Located in a side valley of the Saar, the old cellar is today as it was over 800 years ago. This estate was a favourite of Napoleon's and this year max Von Kunow the current custodian has won Vinum magazine's Rising Star of the Year 2023 and also the "Collection of the Year" from Falstaff Wine magazine. He is "on fire" and these are the best wines he has ever made.

2022 Von Hovel Saar Riesling Trocken
    RRP: $55 | Offer: $49

"So cool and refreshing - think crisp pears -Ample substance on the quite compact, medium-bodied palate. Bold and emphatically dry finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification." 91 points - Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com

2022 Von Hovel Saar Riesling Kabinett
    RRP: $65 | Offer: $58

The classic old Mosel 1000lt barrels that lie in the cellar are a sign of the classic approach here. The slate slopes of (arguably) Germany's most famous vineyard Scharzhofberger and the Grand Cru Hutte provide the backbone and it is almost impossible to think of another wine region that can provide this huge amount of flavour, vivacity and 'cut' in such a light minerally frame.  These wines brim with peach, passionfruit, mandarin, fresh herbs (like sage and mint) and damp earth / rock petrichor notes. The sweetness seems to almost disappear on the palate as the fruit mouth-watering acidity and slate minerality swirl and unfurl. "(2022) This is old-fashioned in a positive sense, the delicate aromas of white tree fruits, orange blossom and rosehips pulling you gently into this juicy light-bodied, almost dry Riesling. Long cool finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification." 92 points - Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com

2021 Von Hovel Saar Riesling Kabinett Magnum
    RRP: $139 | Offer: $126 | Double Magnum: $285

The magnums and double magnums of the 2021 are both in the classic riesling shape and this is a beautiful, complete and impressively balanced wine perfect for some ageing.

2021 Von Hovel Krettnacher Riesling Trocken
    RRP: $79 | Offer: $69

\"The 2021 Riesling Krettnacher from This is 12% alcohol only, but the intensity of this "village" level Riesling is impressive. It has the classic grippy structure with density that belies the "apparent" lightness and tensile freshness. "The 2021 Riesling Krettnacher from a particularly rocky parcel of 60-year-old vines on grey Devonian slate on the Krettnacher Kupp has a touch of ripe pear on the nose. The palate is lithe, serene, bright, and wonderfully profound. The length is impressive, rather mouthwatering." 92 points - Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

2021 Von Hovel Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett
    RRP: $115 | Offer: $99

From the super steep red slate slopes of this monolithic site comes these two vintages of great Kabinetten. At 7.5% alcohol the balance is pin-point with the 2021 having a slightly lower pH and more minerality whilst the 2022 shows slightly more peach and tropical fruit salad nuances. Both vintages show the great and classy length that makes the site so classic and famous.

2022 Von Hovel Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett
    RRP: $115 | Offer: $99

"Smoky on the nose, needs air, slate spice, nettle, sage, lemons, lime zest, yeast. The palate is juicy and fresh, with drive, subtle sweetness combined with lively, ripe acidity, fine spice and long finish, good flow and ageing potential." 95 points - Ulrich Sautter, falstaff.com

2021 Von Hovel Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese
    RRP: $159 | Offer: $144

This has the same vitality and minerality of the Kabinetts but also extra layers of honey, fresh rosemary, nougat and ripe nectarine. This is fermented in 100lt fuders and has inbuilt minerality, mouth-watering sweetness that melts away almost before it is noticed. The acidity is fine and tangy and along with the grippy texture, "cleans" up the finish in a way that is unique to the Mosel. 8% alc.
