Ornellaia & Friends

The Ornellaia Estate was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, very close to Castello di Bolgheri in Tuscany. The 192-acre estate was taken over in 2005 by the Frescobaldi family, who have continued to drive the force behind concentrated and opulent high end Super-Tuscan wines. 2020 saw the last vintage of estate director Axel Heinz, returning to France to his native Bordeaux, this last release of his proving to be one of his greatest and most sought after.

2020 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Rosso DOC
RRP: $601 | Offer: $495

98 Points! - James Suckling
“The 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is made with cabernet sauvignon and merlot with small percentages of cabernet franc and petit verdot. It opens to an impenetrable, full-bodied approach with dark fruit, pencil shaving, toasted oak, Spanish cedar, campfire ash and iron ore. For sure, this is an especially concentrated and oak-driven vintage of this iconic wine. It absolutely requires more aging time. It feels quite tight and firm in its youth. The concentration is abundant." 95 points! - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2019 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Rosso DOC
RRP: $495 | Offer: $399

“Pure delicious fruit expression on the nose, the best and brightest black cherry aromas, so pure and defined. Supremely elegant with delicate perfume surrounding the rich fruit aromas with a dusting of vanilla and milk chocolate. Excellent tension on the palate - you feel this is so direct and pristine, the flavours just driving from start to finish in one straight push but with concentration and intensity. It’s not so layered or expansive at this point but so well executed - you can feel the power. Tannins are grippy with ripe blackcurrants, a fleshy kind of texture to the palate with a hint of dry stoniness and salinity on the finish alongside liquorice and clove. So young and too young to drink but this has incredible depth, confidence and restraint. It’s sleeping now." 98 points! - Georgie Hindle, Decanter

2020 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia Bolgheri Rosso DOC
RRP: $158 | Offer: $134

“The Ornellaia 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia (a proprietary blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot) is a generous and darkly toned red blend that has the extra fruit fiber, sweetness and generous plumpness of a warm vintage. The fullness of the fruit is on full display, but in a very relaxed and natural manner. The wine never feels like too much. The tannins are yielding and velvety, and this purebred Tuscan red wraps thickly over the palate. It's poised for near- and medium-term drinking." 93 points - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
"The 2020 is a wine of total harmony and balance." 93 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

2019 Le Serre Nuove dell’ Ornellaia Bolgheri Rosso DOC
RRP: $145 | Offer: $120

"A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petit verdot, the 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia shows a greater degree of focus and detail compared to the previous vintage that I tasted at the same time. This wine reveals the sharp contours and etched character of the cabernet franc, especially with black licorice and black pepper. The results are linear and pure. Elegant fruit notes of blackberry and dark currant add to the thick layering of the wine. I tasted this sample not long after bottling, and we can expect the wine to hit the market in September 2021. Drink 2022 - 2033." 94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

2021 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia Toscana Rosso IGT
RRP: $70 | Offer: $59

“A firm and silky wine with bark, berry, chocolate and light coffee aromas and flavors. Medium body. Creamy textured finish. Merlot with cabernet sauvignon and some montepulciano. Drinkable and fresh. Drink now." 92 points - James Suckling

"...Bright and youthful fruit with dark cherry, cassis, spice and red rose. This wine is composed of merlot, sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon. You feel the acidity of the Italian grape and the rich fruit from the two French varietals. The wine is tonic and tight with mid-weight intensity. This is the entry-level red from one of Italy's most iconic estates." 91 points - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

2020 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia Toscana Rosso IGT
RRP: $62 | Offer: $45

"Attractive aromas of blue fruit with slate and black-licorice character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and an orange-peel undertone. Wet earth, some fresh sage and rosemary, too. I like the Mediterranean flavors in this vintage. Drink or hold."
93 Points - James Suckling

2018 Monsanto Chianti Classico Annata
Offer: $43

“For the challenging 2021 vintage, this is an enormously structured and compact wine, even though the body is sleeker than most wines of this category from the preceding vintages. A wealth of wild-berry and herb character. Very racy finish with a slew of wet-earth minerality and stacks of fine tannin.” 96pts, 5 stars! – James Suckling

2018 Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva
Offer: $74

"Cedar, dried flowers, cherries and spices on the nose. Medium-to full bodied with very polished, refined tannins and excellent length. This has gorgeous structure. Needs two or three years to soften. Excellent potential. Try after 2023." 95pts - James Suckling

2019 Conti Costanti Rosso Di Montalcino
Offer: $109

A pretty handy Rosso resting a small step away from heading into the next league. This needs time, by the 4th and 5th day the full potential of this Baby Brunello was on full display. Dark cherry, fresh blackberry fruit with an earthy feel, a little dried orange peel, plush long tannins. Layered in spices rolling through, exceptional length and depth. There’s been a bump in price here, if I were to taste it blind I would say it was excellent value. Comparative youth aside in a couple of years if asked was it Rosso or Brunello I’d call the latter. Half the yield of 2018 and it shows! Randall.

2017 Salicutti Sorgente Brunello Di Montalcino

The Salicutti wines were one of the great revelations to me last year. These 2017 wines are monumental examples of the greatness that this estate can produce! Randall.
