    Domaine de Chevalier

    Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux
"The [Domaine de Chevalier] Blanc is one of the world's great wines, hands down." - Antonio Galloni
“I try to do things naturally as I can, constantly seeking a balanced approach to everything, and am not reluctant to rely on modern methods – but always within the framework of Chevalier’s history…” - Olivier Bernard
The original Domaine de Chevalier vineyard was founded in the 1600s, when it was known by the Gascon dialect name 'Chivaley'. In 1983 the Bernard family purchased the winery, and 23-year-old Olivier Bernard took over as manager, a role he still holds today. Olivier began a program of vineyard expansion and replanting to improve the quality of the vines. Chevalier was one of the first chateaux in Bordeaux to adopt Diam corks, and as of 2016 all the estate's wines are bottled under Diam. The estate's white plantings comprise 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon with an average vine age of 30 years. I tasted these wines and was lucky enough to re-taste them all over several days. From the tropical-like exoticism and hedonistic richness of the 2018, to the "cooler" steelier power of the 2016 and 2017 these are "Grand Cru" quality. I, even as Burgundy diehard, resolved to put some in my cellar! Compare the prices to even a "cheap" Burgundy Grand Cru, Corton Charlamange at $500! Cheers, Randall

"This has a complex nose of dried apple, green mango, grapefruit zest, dried honeysuckle and crushed almonds. It’s full-bodied with bright acidity and a dense, phenolic texture. Vivid and layered with fantastic precision. Very, very long. This needs time." 98pts! - James Suckling
"One of the whites of the vintage is the 2018 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc ... it’s going to be relatively accessible in its youth (unlike the 2015) yet should age beautifully." - Jeb Dunnuck

"This is really powerful and structured with superb muscle and phenolic tension. Yet, it’s formed and polished, layered and dense. Full-bodied, but energetic and focused. Vibrant acidity. Goes on for minutes. Citrus, stone, straw, salt and chalk. Incredible." 98pts! - James Suckling
"A wine of noble breeding and class ... a wine that will drink well for several decades." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Still very shy on the nose, but the candied citrus, fresh melon, pear and quince notes come through on the palate, together with discreet, toasty oak. Although this is really concentrated, the power is underplayed and the enormous, herbal and mineral depth steals up on you slowly and then whisks you away. You could enjoy it now, but there’s enormous aging potential. A blend of 70 per cent sauvignon and 30 per cent semillon." 98pts! - James Suckling
