Azelia - New 2021 Barolos
'2021's are darker, with more layers and greater expression of place... Azelia remains one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Piedmont. The artisan, family-driven values that make Piedmont such a unique region are very much alive. The best Barolos here are compelling.'
Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
All vines used for the Barolo are 25yo minimum! This is brilliant release from Azelia, one of Barolo’s most consistent and quietly respected family estates. Farmed across 16ha in Castiglione Falletto where the family has been established for over 100 years - dating back to 1920. South and south-west facing vineyards on calcareous clay soils produce wines that balance structure, perfume and restraint. In the cellar, tradition leads the way, with long fermentations, maturation exclusively in large neutral botti. These 2021 Barolos show precision and authority. Cheers, Randall.

"...deep, succulent and layered. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, cedar and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. Floral and savory overtones play off a core of black cherry/plum fruit. All the elements are very nicely balanced. This is a fine showing from the Scavino family and a terrific wine in its peer group."

"...marries finesse and power. Firm tannins drive through a core of red-toned fruit, iron, white pepper, dried rose petal and chalk. The 2021 is deep and resonant on the palate, but it also offers notable saline-infused vibrancy. It’s a dynamic Barolo in the glass that reveals myriad shades of nuance over time."

2021 Azelia Barolo 'Margheria'
Offer: $249

"...dense, powerful and rather somber. Black fruit, lavender, espresso and gravel add to an impression of gravitas. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2021 is an infant. Muscular tannins make themselves known on the finish. This feels a bit raw and not totally put together yet."

2021 Azelia Barolo 'Bricco Fiasco'
Offer: $249

"...a super-classic wine from this Castiglione Falleto site. Bright acids and veins of tannin drive through a core of red-toned fruit. White pepper, mint, slate and orange peel all race across the palate. The 2021 Bricco Fiasco is an archetype of excellence. It is one of the finest wines I have tasted here in some time."

2021 Azelia Barolo 'Cerretta'
Offer: $309
Offer: $309
"...another of the more potent wines in this range. Ample and resonant, with terrific depth, the 2021 is substantial. It is also a very young Barolo that needs time to unwind. Dark-toned fruit, incense, leather, spice and tobacco add to an impression of gravitas."

New Benchmark Release from Geelong's Iconic 50yo vineyard.
I've tasted these three new release wines and I can confirm that they are stunning, and Bannockburn has most probably never made better (and that's stating a lot!). It was the earliest vintage to date, a warm and steady harvest where all varieties ripened at different times and the hand-picking and grape processing took place in a measured, well-planned way, which is a luxury winemakers love but rarely get! It started on St. Valentine's day and was finished about a month later on St. Pat's day. It's a vintage blessed by the saints!
As many of you know, I'm a burgundy lover, and this new Bannockburn Chardonnay just blows me away for its value and a burgundy-like density and weight with nuanced complexities and satisfying ageability. I can't wait to taste this in 10 years, and I can't wait to taste another bottle next week!
The Pinot is bigger and more powerful than usual, and yes as stated, probably the best ever. The Gamay is impressively dark and surprisingly flavoursome, with its whole-bunch savoury / herbal edge and the deep well of fruit supporting each other. Bravo Bannockburn. Cheers, Randall.
