"It was mid March 2021 and the growing season in southern Victoria was displaying all the hallmarks of another classic La Niña year: cool, wet and slow. If only the weather would warm up and get the buggers ripe! ‘And then’, says Michael Dhillon of Bindi Wines in the Macedon Ranges, ‘during the last week of March and the first week of April, we had 25, 27 degrees [Celsius] every day, and 8 to 10 degrees every night. We went from 7 out of 10 potential vintage quality to 9 out of 10 potential vintage quality in two weeks. It dialled it up that fast. Dhillon 2022 Glenhope Macedon Ranges Rosé

"This Grenache from Heathcote received a few hours skin contact while being gently pressed, fermented without the addition of yeast to dryness in old French barrels and spent five months maturing on yeast lees. It is a delicately coloured rosé, fresh and fragrant of roses, red currant and under-ripe strawberry with a vibrant, dry, textured palate. Dhillon 2022 Glenhope Macedon Ranges Chardonnay

"This new project has given us the opportunity to enjoy making another Macedon Ranges Chardonnay, this time from the north of the region on granite soil. The grapes come from 25 year old vines and the wine is made in the usual Bindi way; 100% wild yeast barrel fermentation, 30% new oak, and ageing for ten months on solids and lees. The wine is bright and combines citrus, white flowers, nectarine and complex nutty/mealy elements. The palate is fresh, tight, chalky, gently creamy and intense. It will gain increased texture and complexity with five years cellaring and be delicious beyond." - Michael Dhillon, winemaker
Dhillon 2022 Col Mountain Heathcote Grenache

"The Col Mountain Grenache project has been revelatory for us. The deep red and incredibly rocky soils of this special vineyard combine with the moderately warm climate to produce Grenache with brilliant raspberry and red cherry vibrancy and a seductive rose aroma. Spice, pomegranate and rhubarb elements add complexity. This is a medium weight wine of excellent harmony and purity that shows terrific balance between fruit intensity and delicacy. Pyrette 2021 Heathcote Shiraz

"From the Colbinabbin Vineyard in Heathcote, the Pyrette Shiraz has long been a favourite for winelovers across the country. Fermentation is in 1,000-litre open vats with wild yeasts, before maturation in French oak barrels, 10% new, for a year. The colour is a violent purple. This wine is still so young but already showing that it has everything in place to transform into the style much loved, especially from such a cracking vintage. The aromatics weave through chocolate, blackberries, cassis and florals. An exuberant, generous style, finely balanced and with a seamless, plush structure. Excellent length, satiny tannins and lots of them, this is a ten year proposition and will improve further over that time. Cracking value." 94pts - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
Bindi 2022 Kostas Rind Chardonnay

The Kostas Rind is grown in a 1.5 hectare plot, naturally fermented in French barrels of which typically 20% are new. The wine remains in barrel on yeast lees over winter with only a small amount of malolactic taking place. It is racked after around eight months and returned to barrel for a further three months before bottling.
The 2021 release of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Bindi is perhaps the most thrilling collection of wines seen from any winery so far this year. This Chardonnay comes from a 1.5 hectare plot with the fruit fermented by wild yeasts in French oak, 20% new. The wine spends time in barrel on yeast lees before racking and then further maturation. This is a lovely shade of deep lemon. The nose is immediately and obviously showing early complexity with stonefruit, guava, grapefruit and immaculate oak integration. Impeccably balanced with a fine line of acidity, there is real energy here and such length. The palate shows some oatmeal characters. A fine-boned, tight-knit Chardonnay which will provide great pleasure over the next eight to ten years and improve even further while doing so." 96pts! - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
Bindi 2022 Dixon Pinot Noir

The Dixon is made from declassified grapes from the Original Vineyard planted in 1988 and grapes from the newer Block K, planted in 2001. It's fermented the same way as the other pinots: 100% de-stemmed and gently worked in small open vats and spends 11 months in French barrels, of which about 10-15% is new.
"The 2022 Dixon spent 10 months in barrel and was bottled in early March. This wine is a composition of sections of the original 1988 planting and the 2001 Kaye vineyard. It has a lifted nose of red and black cherries, wild strawberries, earth and spice. The palate is fresh, supple, builds in texture and has vibrant and intense length. As always, it will be more complex, silky and flowing in three plus years and be enjoyed for a decade or more." - Michael Dhillon, winemaker

"Quite spicy, all cinnamon and nutmeg over sweet potato, strawberry. mint and rhubarb. Medium-bodied, kind of sappy and red fruited, plenty of tang and spice, with a dusty feel to tannin, a sweet earthy beetroot thing happening, good energy, some tomato sweetness, fine grip and a bit of a ‘mineral’ and ironstone, cool lively acidity, and a finish of excellent length. The texture is dusty and firm, although ripeness here is maybe on the cusp, but yeah, edgy is better than being flaccid. Still a wine of great interest and vivacity. Sappy, white peppery, and good. Bindi 2019 Darshan Pinot Noir

"A close-planted (11,000-plus vines per hectare) block of Pinot established in 2014 near the family home, named in memory of Bill Darshan Dhillon, Michael’s father. Half planted to MV6, the rest 115, 777 and Pommard. Less immediately aromatic at this young stage than the other 2021 Pinots from Bindi, this wine saves all its impact for the palate, delivering subtle dark-berry fruit wrapped up in sinewy, twining tannins. "Cherry, dried flowers and roses, almond, hazelnut and spice, cedar and mint. It’s medium-bodied, lovely mouth-perfume, and so much of that, a little sap, raspberry and red cherry, quite juicy, tannin is succulent yet firm, with a graphite character, quiet earthiness, and just so composed and long.
