Australian Chardonnay's rehabilitation is no longer a work in progress — it is a fait accompli. The grape that once defined easy, over-oaked excess has been remade in the vineyard: cooler sites in Tasmania, Beechworth, Mornington Peninsula, and Margaret River are producing wines of surgical precision, mineral drive, and regional character. Critics have noticed. Vinous declared the variety firmly in the "premier league"; James Suckling handed his Australian Wine of the Year to Tolpuddle's Tasmanian Chardonnay for the second consecutive time; and in March 2026, Taylors Wines placed two bottles in the Top 10 at Chardonnay du Monde — blind, in Burgundy, against 471 wines from 25 countries.
