    Domaine Jean Grivot stands among the undisputed stars of Burgundy. Based in Vosne-Romanée, the domaine has been family-run for generations and is today led by Étienne Grivot, now joined by his children Mathilde and Hubert. Since taking the reins in 1990, Étienne has quietly and relentlessly refined both vineyard and cellar work, transforming Grivot into one of the most admired names in the Côte de Nuits through patience, precision and unwavering standards.

    Farming around 15 hectares across 22 appellations, with vines averaging 45-50 years of age, the estate’s holdings include Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Clos de Vougeot, Échézeaux and Richebourg. Viticulture is resolutely natural and exacting: organic treatments only, grass cover, horse and plough, strict pruning and rigorous crop thinning. In the cellar, intervention is minimal and the wines are shaped with restraint, allowing each site to speak clearly. As Jasper Morris MW notes, these are deeply personal wines, aromatic, poised and increasingly profound up the hierarchy offering authority, class and exceptional ageing potential from one of Burgundy’s very finest domaines.



    Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022

    This always reminds me of a Puligny Montrachet, and it's actually a Vosne Romanee Blanc, but there is no appellation for such a white. It's mostly from La Fontaine de Vosne (next to leroy's Aux Genaivrieres and directly below Aux Reas) and 20% from Au-dessus de la Rivière also adjoining Aux Reas. This is totally barrel fermented and given careful and loving attention by the family. It ends up with power and subtle grip, but also lemony fruit with a twang of yellow fruits, a hint of reduction, spice and very fine acidity and long finish. Jasper Morris
    Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2022

    87-89 points. Attractive mid crimson purple. A little more reserved on the nose yet with swelling fruit across the palate, a little fresh pepper at the finish which just enlivens the wine and adds a mineral touch. Tasted Nov 2023. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
     
    86-88 points. Mild reduction overshadows what are clearly ripe fruit aromas. There is a round, even suave, mouthfeel to the delicious middleweight flavors that offer reasonably good depth and persistence on the firm and mildly rustic finale. Allen Meadows, burghound.com.

    89-92 points. Not so deep in colour, but quite elegant on the nose. A lighter red fruit profile. Beautifully generous through the middle, perfumed strawberry and raspberry, with a structure built more on acidity than tannin. Tasted Nov 2023. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy.
    88-91 points. A more elegant and much spicier nose reflects notes of mostly poached plum, violet and exotic tea. There is also better concentration and verve to the focused and surprisingly powerful flavors that conclude in a lingering, firm and youthfully austere finale. Allen Meadows, burghound.com.

    90-93 points. A pretty ruby purple. The nose has a class and an intensity of ripe red berry fruit at a level well above the regular Vosne-Romanée. Graceful and delicious. Pleasingly persistent, worth trading up to if available. Tasted Nov 2023. Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy. 
    90-92 points. The perfumed essence of red currant, anise, sandalwood and a similar hint of exotic spiced tea gives way to round, supple and caressing medium-bodied flavors that are less mineral driven on the equally austere and beautifully long and balanced finale.     Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Les Chaumes” 2022

    92-94 points. No more than medium deep red crimson but the nose is beautiful, very expressive, all in a ripe enough red fruit. The 1er cru aspect shows in the concentrated red fruit behind. Pleasing length, everything in place: “that makes it a few years since the Chaumes began to take on intelligence and sophistication” offers Etienne. Tasted Nov 2023.     95-97 points. The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, white flowers and hints of blood orange. Very harmonious and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with grain tannins. It’s not powerful but tensile with an almost crystalline finish fanning out effortlessly. Superb. Neal Martin, vinous.com.  
     
    92-95 points. Firm reduction. Much more interesting are the super-sleek and tautly muscular larger-bodied flavors that flash good minerality on the borderline painfully intense, powerful and robust finale that also goes on and on.     92-94 points. Ruby crimson colour, a reductive nose, with a bit of the burnt limestone character of Brûlées. Much greater density on the palate, this is a solid powerful, correctly ripe pinot, which does not show the reductive character in the mouth. A clean fine long finish. Tasted Nov 2023.     93-95 points. A fine bright mid ruby purple. Perfectly poised fruit on the nose, this is not massive but it has been beautifully put together, a very sensual raspberry fruit with cherry undertones, just enough acidity, fine tannins. There is one of the more floral-inflected wines in the range with its aromas of lavender, rose petal and lilac and violet that add elegance to the black pinot fruit, sandalwood and jasmine tea scents. There is a lovely sense of tension to the finely detailed and overtly stony middleweight flavors that possess a highly sophisticated texture, all wrapped in a superbly long, balanced and driving finish.     93-95 points. Clear bright ruby purple. The nose flickers in and out, and while there is a fine tensile line of red berry fruit, this is not too demonstrative. Perhaps some of the refined detail of an Echezeaux. A slight sucrosity of strawberry fruit, and very persistent. Very good and extremely typical of Suchots this year. Tasted Nov 2023.     92-95 points. An exuberantly spicy nose is classic Vosne in composition with its ripe dark berries, more discreet floral elements and touches of exotic tea nuances. The exceptionally rich, even enveloping, medium weight plus flavors possess evident power on the compact, structured and beautifully balanced finale where the length goes on and on because just as it starts to die away, it reappears. This beauty of a Suchots should amply reward extended keeping, indeed it will need most of a decade just to be approachable. Allen Meadows, burghound.com.

    89-91 points. Here too moderate reduction is enough to mask the underlying fruit. The sleek, vibrant and lightly stony medium weight flavors possess slightly better complexity and persistence on the balanced, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly rustic finale.     92-94 points. Bright mid red, with a more profound but less complex aromatic profile after Roncière. There is a sweetness to the raspberry fruit on the palate, perfectly judged ripeness, with a firmer structure behind. More juicy red fruit at the finish. Tasted Nov 2023.     92-94 points. Ample amounts of the sauvage and newly turned earth nuances add breadth to the poached plum and black pinot fruit aromas. The rich, round, concentrated and muscular big-bodied flavors exhibit excellent powerful on the very firm, serious and superbly long finale.     93-96 points. For the first time the Boudots is half young vines and half old, so needs to be picked earlier than in the past. A bright mid purple, there is an impressive intensity to the fruit, half red berries, half darker raspberry, half Nuits and half Vosne. This is not too bulky, too massive, but entirely harmonious with a long fine and fresh finish.

    92-95 points. A wonderfully spicy and broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of purple fruit, earth, exotic tea and a floral top note. There is both first-rate density and powerful to the sappy big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also buffers the firm tannic spine shaping the beautifully persistent finish.     93-95 points. Mid red crimson. The barrel gives a slightly firm note to the fruit on the nose. There is a weight of red fruit beneath though this is rather reserved and only at the finish does the fruit come back. No black fruit notes at all. In reserve and slightly saline. Tasted Nov 2023.     93-95 points. Here a more restrained nose somewhat grudgingly offers up an array of pretty red berry scents that are trimmed in notes of earth, wood and a suggestion of smoked game. The delicious and vibrant larger-bodied flavors are both more powerful and more concentration though they don't have the refinement or sophistication of the Reignots on the beautifully long and more complex finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. At last moderate patience strongly advised.

    Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022

    93-96 points. A ripe yet cool nose combines a plethora of spice and floral elements with those of plum, exotic tea and dark currant. The moderately dense and caressing medium weight flavors display focused power on the hugely long, balanced and strikingly complex finale.     92-95 points. Mid purple colour. An intriguing nose, almost something vegetal. A rougher edge to the fruit in the mouth, from the barrel. Rich sweet strawberry fruit in between. From another barrel, softer, a little more volume, and some gas as this barrel had not been sampled for a while. In short, the Echezeaux was in a slightly grumpy mood and may very well improve on this performance after further elevage.

    Richebourg Grand Cru 2022

    96-98 points. A glowing crimson purple. A certain nobility to the nose. A brilliant combination of hedonism and precision, the expressive dense floral notes, waves of perfectly ripe red fruit, and that’s just the bouquet. Suave, sweetly fruited, nuanced, yet never losing site of the grace and the depth. Caresses all parts. Seamless finish with perfect acid and tannin balance. Tasted Nov 2023.     94-97 points. Much like the VRBM, the cool, airy and strikingly well-layered nose is overtly floral-suffused while displaying additional liqueur-like aromas of essence of red and dark currant, poached plum and exotic tea wisps. There is already superb depth to the wonderfully sleek and solidly dense broad-shouldered flavors that possess a wonderfully beguiling texture before terminating a well-balanced, youthfully austere and stunningly long finish, indeed this offers the best length in the range.
