From Pfalz to Australia: 2023 Weingut Jülg: A Forceful, Dynamic Approach

"Wine is made in the vineyard and this ecosystem must be protected. In the cellar, it's as little intervention as possible, as much rest as necessary. Our goal is authenticity: salty, precise, elegant wines." - Johannes Jülg, Winemaker

After hearing about Johannes Jülg from K-P Keller we have never looked back. The Jülg wines have pushed beyond 'mere' excellence to greatness in the 7 years that we have imported them.

Situated on the Pfalz/Alsace border, his organic estate has pinot and riesling growing on both sides of the border; French / German grapes legally labelled as Pfalz.

Johannes is third generation and enthusiastically took over the 20ha estate in 2010, after 7 years of experience working at Keller, Clemens Busch and Clos des Lambrays amongst others. He is an energetic, deep-thinking and enthusiastic vigneron. There are no recipes for any wine - instead, Johannes opts to listen and watch, following what nature, the vines and the soils dictate. These soils vary from limestone to red sandstone, including blends of both.

Jülg rieslings are a masterclass in texture and lithe power. A strong belief in phenolic ripeness and gentle extraction (by feet!), as well as the use of both stainless steel and old oak results in wines of purity and honesty that provide bright expressions of their terroir. Similarities can more easily be drawn with the wines of the Rheinhessen than with the more geographically proximate Alsace.

The 2023's continue to impress and up the ante among a line of recent stunning vintages that see surging power coupled with balance and finesse.  We absolutely encourage you to taste some! Cheers, Randall.
