"The 2023 Riesling vom Kalk, picked in Schweigen, Dörrenbach and Weissenburg, immediately shows a gentle and cooling, smooth, yeasty lemon freshness. The palate is rounded, smooth and light, with a lovely yeasty texture and lemony brightness. (Bone-dry)." Anne Krebiel, Vinous
“Correct and gorgeous, with floral and citrus notes. So refreshing! So pure and mineral.” Jancis Robinson on prior vintage.
'All the colors of apples animate this sleek and crisp dry riesling. The restrained tannins in the finish harmonize with the strident acidity. Very good length, but you need to like acidity to enjoy this.' 90 points - Scott Piggott, James Suckling
"Welcome to a world high up in the clouds. So amazingly fresh and delicate, so sleek and filigreed. Stunning aromas of white peaches and spring blossoms. In spite of being only medium-bodied, it has terrific concentration and tingling minerality. From organically grown grapes." 94 points - Stuart Pigott, James Suckling
The ambassadors of origin and terroir! This wine comes from Schweigen's (pron. Schwhen) finest vineyards (so all German sites wheras the Kalk above is from German and Alsace sites) and embodies their unique soil structure and microclimate – mineral, pure, and precise. It is a harbinger of our single-vineyard wines and a true insider tip.
Hand-harvested. Gentle processing. Spontaneous fermentation and aging in oak barrels. Bright fruit aromas of lemon and lime. This shows a little more intensity and textural complexity than the "Kalk". It has notes of nectarines, pears, lemons pith, verbena and white flowers. It has a chalky minerality and tension, aromatic brightness. fine extract (a little crushing of fruit), fruit sweetness and lively acidity. Yes, it looks absolutely classic, juicy, lively and charming!
For Johannes, 2021 is a "self-contained, very vibrant, clear and ultimately classic vintage, where elegance and vibrancy take centre stage. The wines have a lot of fruit and inner density,” he says happily.
"From the super steep red slate slopes of this monolithic site comes these two vintages of great Kabinetten. At 7.5% alcohol the balance is pin-point with the 2021 having a slightly lower pH and more minerality whilst the 2022 shows slightly more peach and tropical fruit salad nuances. Both vintages show the great and classy length that makes the site so classic and famous." 92 points! - Ulrich Sautter, Falstaff Weinguide Deutschland
“this is an enormously structured and compact wine, even though the body is sleeker than most wines of this category from the preceding vintages. A wealth of wild-berry and herb character. Very racy finish with a slew of wet-earth minerality and stacks of fine tannin.” 96pts, 5 stars! – James Suckling
