2019 Heartwines 'Archie' Old Bush-Vine Heart McLaren Vale Grenache

This is made from fruit grown on the famous Highsands block at Yangarra from the venerable 1940's bushvines plantings! It's made from the destemmed but not crushed berries (like black cavair) and fermented in a small batch using gentle foot plunging and some pump-overs. After the fermentation it's aged in a demi-muid and some old smaller barrels so there is no oak in the flavour profile. When it was younger I used to call it the "Chambolle of the Vale" because of its intense red-fruit / raspberry fruit, but now as it slowley ages there is a little more earth and sandalwood creaping in. It's not a light nor heavy wine but it has complexity of flavour and texture, still with nice freshness and great ageing potential too. This is not a wine designed to ever sell at this low price! About 15% whole bunches, fermented in wood and steel, maturation in concrete and large old French oak. A vintage like this really illustrates the kinship with the avant-garde grenache of Gredos, and with Barbaresco, and refined Etna Rosso (Girolamo Russo in particular), rather than almost anything from the Rhône. Savoury, dried red fruits, cranberry, cherry and redcurrant, warm terracotta, bergamot, potpourri, sumac, ground cinnamon, star anise, so tightly coiled, but also tensile, finely expansive in its flavour delivery. "From 81-year-old vines planted to deep Maslin Sands. Fermented with 12% whole bunches over two weeks, then settled in tank for a month; élevage in a 4500L old French oak vat. This is spicy, lifted, with the depth that this site always displays, the layering of fruit, spice and mineral inflection all visible, but the old-vine intensity viewed though through a cooler lens. Red fruited, with berries, cherries and pomegranate, fresh red florals, musk and blood orange, the tannins so impeccably fine and graceful, yet no less purposeful and savoury. "Well, there is certainly a theme in the '23s. A degree of alcohol less, lower colour and a commanding, yet incredibly fine, structural framework. This is a very different High Sands, a reflection of the cool year, but also an evolving direction, leaning into elegance, soaring fragrance and savoury tension. Red cherry, tart raspberry, intensely floral, swirling with North African spices, musk and orange peel. The palate opens with clarity, ripe fruit fleshiness and drive, framed by lively acidity. Silky in texture, it moves with ease across the mid-palate, the tannins finely woven and unobtrusive. Subtle pepper spice adds lift before a finish marked by refined, savoury bitters that lends both length and distinction.
The clay soil and the 20 day maceration added suave tannins and the ageing in cement for 9 months helped to round out and meld the 4 varieties. Randall
