This label is owned by the Harrop Bros. Matt and Steve (and families). Steve is based in North Otago’s Waitaki Valley, not far from the Central Otago sites that supply pinot noir for this wine. With decades of vineyard development and wine experience, Steve has a sharp eye for sourcing the right fruit at the right price — a skill that’s earned him quiet legend status in the trade.

Matt lives in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, where he grows grapes for his family label, Silentway.

The label is a musical nod to the iconic drum solo from “Amen, Brother” by The Winstons, but the wine itself is made by grapes grown in Bendigo on the famed Chinaman’s terrace (home to icons like Prophet’s Rock). This pinot tastes nothing like a sub-$30 wine. The colour is deep (for a pinot) and youthful, with an instantly expressive and smile inducing, enticingly aromatic nose of blue and red berries, ripe cherries and subtle floral notes (like violets). The palate flows on with plenty of fruit and ripe complexity, but a certain restraint that is sometimes missing in pinots of this region. There is good density and depth and a little herbal, Campari-like savory intricacy. This is really bursting with lovely fruit and some nice tannins in balance. It’s a substantial and quietly powerful wine. Massive inward concentration, inky texture, grippy, silty tannin in a web shaping things, huge perfume of wild berries and mint and chocolate and sooty spice. The palate, a delight, a flowing, sleek thing of darkness, woody spice and savoury things. Dustiness here in a good way. There’s a distinct kind of old school, good school feel here, perhaps pushed through a modern lens, but leaning into more laid back, wine-for-cellaring vibes. And yet, the finesse seeps into things and convinces you to drink now. Compelling.'

Lovingly hand-picked from ancient bush-vines on the Highsands' block and made by the late great Pete Fraser and the team at Yangarra.

This wine is “close to our hearts”. I bought the organic grapes from the Yangarra Highsands' block (planted in the 40’s) of bush vines of high pedigree! Peter Fraser and Shelly Torresan made the wine at Yangarra in a very hand-crafted way using whole berries and open fermentation with hand-plunging, followed by ageing in older oak barrels. It’s a perfumed, slightly reserved young wine at present, but it’s silky and beautifully textured red with enough ripe tannins to age for a decade or more. This is pure! - Randall

From vines near the sandy sector in the north of Chateauneuf near Corthezon. 'Black fruit, raspberry jam, quite meaty and nutty, a little spice and dried herb. 'This smells of a baker’s kitchen – full of Chinese Five-spice, pepper, nutmeg and more. "A vintage like this really illustrates the kinship with the avant-garde grenache of Gredos, and with Barbaresco, and refined Etna Rosso (Girolamo Russo in particular), rather than almost anything from the Rhône. Savoury, dried red fruits, cranberry, cherry and redcurrant, warm terracotta, bergamot, potpourri, sumac, ground cinnamon, star anise, so tightly coiled, but also tensile, finely expansive in its flavour delivery. “From 81-year-old vines planted to deep Maslin Sands. Fermented with 12% whole bunches over two weeks, then settled in tank for a month; élevage in a 4500L old French oak vat. This is spicy, lifted, with the depth that this site always displays, the layering of fruit, spice and mineral inflection all visible, but the old-vine intensity viewed though through a cooler lens. Red fruited, with berries, cherries and pomegranate, fresh red florals, musk and blood orange, the tannins so impeccably fine and graceful, yet no less purposeful and savoury. The fruit clings to the tannins – like flesh to a cherry pit – without spilling out. This is the home domaine of Emmanuel Reynaud (of Rayas) who died recently, Chateau des Tours produces beautiful, fresh, clean and elegant wines with rose petal / potpourri character that often bear more than a passing resemblance to the more prestigious wines of Rayas. This wine has complexity, deliciousness and an ethereal crushed berry, floral fruit that belies its fairly light (but relatively youthful) colour. I wonder how they do it?  These wines always amaze me. Randall.

2021 was a dream year: aromatic intensity, cool acidity, creamy texture — everything in equilibrium. The result is a white wine found nowhere else: opulent, mineral, exotic  and taut at the same time, generous and fresh. This is 100% clariette from vines planted in 1982, harvested from the sandy bottom of the slope where there are richer soils than the Côtes-du-Rhône. Once malolactic fermentation is completed, the wine is aged for 8-9 months before bottling. Very rare and of utmost quality in its unique, full-on style, this is a wine to try!
