“Spicy and linear nose, showing a great breed. Excellent concentration of fruit on the palate. Classic cassis, graphite and mint notes. Precise tannins and vertical acidity. Very elegant and focused. Outstanding ageing potential here. 5% of Malbec complete the blend.” 93 Pts. - Decanter
Saint-Joseph Superstar
Domaine Jean-Claude Marsanne
The Marsanne family, as their name attests, has a long and deep-rooted history in the northern Rhône, in particular around Mauves, the birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation. In 1920, current owner Jean-Claude’s grandfather, Jean-Pierre, became the first in the family to focus solely on vineyards—no easy task given the impossibly steep slopes of Mauves.
Jean-Claude holds tightly to the traditions of his family, including farming the steepest parcels by hand, as was done by his grandfather Jean-Pierre; using indigenous yeasts for slow, natural fermentations, like his father taught him; and aging his wines extensively on fine lees, releasing each cuvée at its most expressive moment. The highly-sought results are breathtaking, perfumed and vibrant with notes of black berry fruit, black pepper as well as a slight smokiness from the oak barrel, all delivered with seemless class. They are widely considered one of the greats, with a notable endorsement by the one and only Kermit Lynch as a long time favourite address.
2023 IGP Ardèche 'Syrah Mauve' (100% Shiraz)
$79 | Offer: $64
This wine comes from two granite lieux-dits (single sites) from the hills above the Rhône near Mauves. It tastes of pure syrah, with more emphasis on fresh crushed strawberries and raspberries. If you want an unmistakable taste of the region and its smoky, berry-fruited, white-peppery reds, then this is perfect.
The 0.77ha of vines are planted in 2016 on decomposed granite soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for 4 weeks without SO2 and aged in stainless steel for about 11 months. This is so pure, perfumed, clean, fresh, vibrant, delicious and intriguing!
2022 AOC Saint-Joseph Rouge (100% Shiraz)
$105 | Offer: $94.90
The vines are planted in 1940-1945, 1950-1960, 1995-1998 on granitic soils over a total of 6.5ha. For vinification, grapes are 100% destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before aging for 12-15 months in 600L demi-muid (70-80%) and 228L barrels (20-30%). This has the full-on pepper, olive, tapenade, spice and lovely ripe fruited richness. The palate is full and generous without any fat and undue heaviness It's a prime example of a gold-class St Joey...
2023 AOC Saint-Joseph Blanc (100% Marsanne)
$123 | Offer: $114
This blanc is a more exotic example than most St. Josephs showing amazing rose-water, ripe peach and almost tropical fruit expressions along with orange blossom and lemon rind and lovely crushed-rock minerality.
These vines were planted in 1990, 1995 and 2010 across 0.85ha on clay and granitic soils. Vinification sees fermentation in (oak) tonneaux for 6 weeks before being racked to smaller barrels and aged for 11 months in 228L barrels.
This is a rare beauty and I'm buying some! Randall.
