After hearing about Johannes Jülg from K-P Keller, other prominent wine makers, merchants and sommeliers, our interest was piqued. This curiosity lead us to a special Riesling and Pinot 'rising star' estate that has half of its vineyards in France and half in Germany! Johannes is third generation and enthusiastically took over the 20ha estate in 2010, after 7 years of experience working at Keller, Clemens Busch and Clos des Lambrays amongst others. Johannes is an energetic, deep-thinking and enthusiastic vigneron, who abides by no recipe for any wine, but prefers to listen and watch, and follow what nature, the vines and the soils dictate.

This riesling (Vom Kalk = from the limestone/chalk) is a masterclass in texture. A strong belief in phenolic ripeness and gentle extraction (by feet!), as well as the use of both stainless steel and old oak results in a wine of purity and honesty that provide bright expressions of terroir. Similarities can more easily be drawn with the wines of the Rheinhessen than with the more geographically proximate Alsace. Try it for yourself!

The Gjergja family of Kooyong Estate, purchased this 19ha Gippsland Bellvale vineyard and 2025 is the first release made by the gifted and determined winemaker Tim Perrin at the prime Kooyong cellar. The Bellvale vines were originally planted in 1998 at a fairly high density of 8000 vines per/ha. I tasted these two wines earlier in the month and they are great value and captivating wines! NV Ayala Brut Majeur - $87 in Singles

This shows lovely balance in an approachable, up-front style well-suited to near-term drinking. Clean, mineral notes add a sense of proportion on the fresh, vibrant finish. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, 80% of which is from the 2012 vintage, while the rest of the wine is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reserve wines.

2023 Philippe Colin Bourgogne Rouge - $59 in Singles

The Colin is a blend of Chassagne and Santenay fruit, and not many people realise, but Philippe is an accomplished red wine maker. This is deep, fairly dark, fleshy and well nuanced. A delicious drink, at an amazing price.

2022 Fontaine-Gagnard Passetoutgrain (Gamay/Noir) - $49 in Singles

Celine Fointaine grows and picks these two varieties (pinot and gamay) from adjacent plantings, co-ferments them and otherwise treats the wine like any other of her reds, except there is no new oak. It's spicy, berry fruited and beautifully perfumed with a thirst-quenching cut, but a thirst inducing flavour, value and quality.
