    Maconnais

Recent vintages in the Macon have been so kind to the great producers and now with officially recognised 1er Crus making some producers work harder (or at least getting proper recognition) the landscape of premium producers is festooned with gems that are the quality of many a Meursault or Chassagne, for 1/2 the price. The richness, complexity, depth of flavour and overall quality of all the wines here is astonishing! These prices are incredible bargains for such quality, as all of these wines are made from carefully grown, well-sited vines and made in the same way as fine white Burgundy from a top Cote d'Or domaine.

    Chateau du Clos

Chateau du Clos is a tiny estate situated at the base of the Solutre slope, adjoining the village of Pouilly. Run by Frederic Burrier of Chateau de Beauregard, this is the "bulls' eye" 1er Cru site of "Pouilly" Frederic's wines have a depth, richness, ageability and a Cote de Beaune-ish fullness of flavour and character that is impressive and rare in the Macon. His wines have more extract, more glycerol (with balanced acidity) and more savoury elements than most.

Chateau du Clos 2018 Pouilly-Fuisse 'Pouilly'
    RRP: $129 | Offer: $95!

From 2020 onwards this label says "1er Cru" and this 2018 shows the richness and depth of 2018 with the signature impressive textural grip of the vintage. "Magical bouquet, a little touch of roses rinsed in coconut. This carries the weight of fruit very easily, no feeling of heat here, a balanced 13.2%. Frédéric notes that he has to be careful here as ripening goes quickly. It is usually one of the first to be picked, though retaining a coolness in style." 91pts - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Chateau du Clos 2020 Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru 'Pouilly'
    RRP: $159 | Offer: $109!

Like the 2018 above, this has the quality of a good Meursault! So that makes them both ridiculous bargains! "A slightly riper if otherwise similar nose precedes finer if not denser flavours that coat the palate in sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive mouthfeel to the bone-dry, youthfully austere and compact finale that is noticeably more tightly wound ... this is going to require at least a few years of patience and should repay 5 to 8 years of cellaring." 91-93pts - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Chateau du Clos 2018 Pouilly Fuisse 'Hommage a Leonard Chandon'
    RRP: $175 | Offer: $129!

A cuvee of the best barrels from the best plots in the Pouilly Premier Cru selected by Frederic for their ageing potential, high quality and great depth.
"Bottled in March 2020. Fine pale primrose. The nose has superb density in the same style as the regular Pouilly, rose petals with a slight coconut infusion. Builds more and more in the mouth, without taking on too much heat." 92pts - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

    Saumaize-Michelin

"Christine and Roger Saumaize preside over this fine 9.5-hectare domaine in Vergisson. Biodynamic farming, limited yields and manual harvesting are the fundamentals of their approach in the vineyards, followed by fermentation in barrel and maturation on the lees. The various parcels have been vinified separately since 1985. The wines are concentrated and structured, exemplifying the artisanal excellence that seems to proliferate in Vergisson." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
This is a rock-star producer that I would have been proud to import. Unfortunately for me, another lucky importer "got there" first. This is one of Jasper Morris's favourites and one of those Pouilly Fuisse estates who's wines taste more like a Meursault or Puligny. RP.

    Saumaize-Michelin 2021 Macon-Villages
    RRP: $58 | Offer: $49!

The Mâcon-Villages, from the commune of Bussières on clay-limestone soils orientated north, has a pretty bouquet, clean and pure with freshly-sliced pear and light menthol scents. The palate is well balanced with a pleasant fatness, ripe and generous with a slightly petrolly-finish.

    Saumaize-Michelin 2021 Saint-Veran
    RRP: $66 | Offer: $56!

"This is also aromatically pure, cool and airy with a more citrus-infused nose. Here too there is excellent volume and intensity to the medium-bodied flavors that flash almost as much minerality on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and borderline aggressively lemony finish." 87-89pts - Allen Meadows, Burghound

    Saumaize-Michelin 2021 Pouilly-Fuisse 'En Tilliers'
    RRP: $74 | Offer: $63!

"Elegant and exceptionally pretty aromas are dominated by white flower, lemon-lime and essence of pear scents that are trimmed in a subtle application of wood. There is a lovely sense of both vibrancy and sophistication to the strikingly textured and lightly stony flavors that offer fine persistence on the agreeably dry and refreshing finish. This promising effort needs at least some patience with the goal of developing a bit more depth, however." 90-92pts, Outstanding! - Allen Meadows, Burghound

    Saumaize-Michelin 2021 Pouilly-Fuisse 'Pentacrine'
    RRP: $87 | Offer: $74!

"Fresh, bright and cool aromas include those of green apple, just sliced citrus and spiced pear. There is very good mid-palate density to the delicious and vibrant flavors that conclude in a clean, focused, dry and markedly saline-inflected finale. This could also use better depth though more should develop in time." 89-91pts - Allen Meadows, Burghound

    Saumaize-Michelin 2021 Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru 'Vers Cras'
    RRP: $124 | Offer: $104!

"Here the wood treatment is more prominent though still reasonably subtle on the aromas of Granny Smith, anise and less obvious petrol nuances. The sleek, intense and beautifully delineated middleweight flavors flash an almost aggressive minerality on the bone-dry, austere and balanced finale. Lovely and understated." 90-93pts, Outstanding! - Allen Meadows, Burghound

    Guffens-Heynen

"What more is there to say about the extraordinary wines of Jean-Marie Guffens and the complex, mercurial personality behind them? Certainly, with each visit—and each opened bottle—my appreciation for both only grows ... Guffens's ample but incisive wines represent the apotheosis of a grape and a place. To say they are the equal of the wines of Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault would be to do them a disservice, because they're all too frequently better." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

    Guffens-Heynen 2021 Macon-Pierreclos 'Deuxieme Vendange de Chavigne'

    EXTREMELY LIMITED
"The 2021 Mâcon-Pierreclos Deuxième Vendange de Chavigne unwinds in the glass with notions of crisp pear, fresh bread, smoke, toasted nuts and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a taut, compact core that's framed by chalky acids and bright acids, it concludes with a saline finish." 90-92pts - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

     Guffens-Heynen 2021 Saint-Veran 'Cuvee Unique'
    RRP: $215 | Offer: $179!

Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's seamless and enveloping, with lively acids and a penetrating finish." 90-92pts - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

    Guffens-Heynen 2021 Guffens-Heynen  Pouilly-Fuisse 'Cuvee Unique'
    RRP: $299 | Offer: $249!

    EXTREMELY LIMITED
"Including some fruit picked as it began to turn color (a condition known as "levroutée" in Mâconnais parlance), Guffens's 2021 Pouilly-Fuissé Cuvée Unique unites all his holdings in the appellation. Exhibiting aromas of citrus zest, mint, confit orange, white flowers and nutmeg, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with uncommon richness and structure for the vintage, concluding with a long, slightly lactic finish." 91-93pts - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

    Chateau Fuisse

The Chateau de Fuisse is rich in history with the estate dating back to the mid-15th century and having been run by the Vincent family since 1882, The family’s 40 hectares of vineyards are draped across some of the best terroirs of southern Burgundy, and the family celebrate the ripeness and concentration that their grapes can achieve. Like a good and well-exposed Meursault Charmes, the 1er Cru Le Clos is deeply flavoured, exotically fruited and quite sizeable in its richness and density.

Ch. Fuisse 2021 Pouilly-Fuisse 'Tete de Cuvee'
    RRP: $89 | Offer: $76!

The Tête de Cuvée is a blend of the various soils from 40 parcels mainly around Fuissé - aged 60% in oak and 40% stainless steel. The less clayey soils and younger vines are those that are aged in stainless steel. It has a well-defined bouquet with touches of grilled walnut and honeysuckle, hints of white chocolate in the background. The palate is well balanced with a hints of dried honey and slate-like notes. The cool vintage brings fine acidity, and there is a lovely touch of spice towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. Try and keep a few of these in the cellar!

Ch. Fuisse 2020 Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru 'Le Clos'
    RRP: $169 | Offer: $145!

The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Clos 1er Cru comes from a 2.68ha walled vineyard, the only officially-recognised Premier Cru monopole in the area. The plot has clay at the bottom, marl in the middle and limestone at the top. The plot looks like Batard, a gentle east-facing slope that looks perfect.
"It was picked on 30 August. The nose is quite reticent at first, so leaving the wine in my glass for 10 minutes, it really opens and shows its complexity thanks to the mélange of soils, honeysuckle and dried honey, lime and faint hints of liquorice. The palate is very well balanced with good depth, real weight and presence here, texturally-satisfying with impressive persistence on the finish. Excellent, but wise owls will cellar this for several years before broaching." 94pts! - Neal Martin, Vinous
