'This release is as pitch perfect as they come. Medium in body, fruit-driven but with savoury and herbal inputs, slipped with tannin and satisfying through the finish. Prettiness, lightness and darkness are all afforded equal billing, which then allows toasty, meaty, umami characters to work around the edges. This is an insider’s wine—a true gem in Australian Pinot Noir. With each passing year, the maturing vines and Kevin and Tricia's commitment to the vineyard and minimalist, classical winemaking elevate these wines to ever greater heights. 'Homage faces north-east, is the smallest of the vineyards, was planted from cuttings taken from Main Ridge Estate, and – important on the Peninsula – is the most sheltered of the vineyards.

This release is better than excellent. It’s elegant and fine-boned but it has genuine power, most of the latter formed, assembled and employed through the back half of the palate and out through the finish. It’s a Pinot Noir for lovers of Pinot Noir. It’s modestly sweet-sour but it’s silken and cohesive, its black cherry, meat, toast and floral elements singing as one. This is my favourite of the 2022 Hurley Vineyards pinots; they’re all good, but this for me is the most complete.'

2024 Estate Pinot Noir

"The Estate release combines the three individual vineyards of the Hurley property.

There’s complexity to this release, there’s a silken feel to it, and most importantly there’s a lovely even glide throughout, the latter extending appreciably through the finish. I wish that I could leave the review there, because that’s all anyone needs to know. But some people like to hear individual flavour descriptors, so here goes: undergrowth, toast, a bell clear expression of red cherry, a saucy smokiness, rose petals with a gentle decay to them, whispers of dry tobacco. Tannin is fine, just assertive enough, and effectively works as a conduit to the progress of the flavour ongoing. For reasons of complexity, length and mouthfeel, I would place this among the best Hurley Vineyard wines that I’ve tried."

2024 'Hommage' Pinot Noir

The tannin in this wine starts from the mid palate. It’s arguably the most structural of the 2024 Hurley Vineyard releases. Pronounced herb notes rest on cherry-plum fruit, with fresh cedar and sweet spice notes soaked within. This isn’t a big Pinot Noir, it’s varietal and fresh, and yet it feels imposing. It’s a wine with a beautiful future.'

2024 'Lodestone' Pinot Noir

'Lodestone is north-facing and the warmest of the three sites. But it’s planted to the Burgundian clones 114, 115 and 777 (along with some MV6), and the soils the vines are planted in are rockier. 203 dozen made.

Of the four Hurley Vineyard pinots noirs released this year, this is the one that I’ll take home with me. They’re all excellent but this one just has the balance of all the various components arranged so impeccably. It’s the perfect mix of fruit and undergrowth, earth and wood, tannin and pure, lively juice. There’s a chalky, minerally character to the finish, in particular, though this aspect is present throughout – even as it lays on a fair amount of silken charm. This is great stuff.'

2024 'Garamond' Pinot Noir

'The Garamond vineyard is east-facing, and planted to MV6 clone. It’s the coolest of the Hurley vineyards but it often produces quite substantial Pinot Noir. 152 dozen made.

It’s touch and go as to whether there’s too much oak here but give it time and such concerns will dissipate. There’s no question though that the fruit itself and the length of the finish are in excellent shape. Cedar, red and black cherry, swings of earth and undergrowth and an infusion of woodsmoke. There’s power and there’s confidence to this wine; it has cellarworthinecs written all over it. In time it will be a beauty.'
