Curly Flat & Silent Way

Matt Harrop needs no introduction to most wine lovers.  He made a significant name for himself at Shadowfax, and over the recent few years has been creating absolutely stunning and benchmark Macedon Ranges pinots and chardonnays at Curly Flat, plus some of the best value and crazily superb wines under his family's own Silent Way label. Is this Australia's best value pinot?
Cheers, Randall

Curly Flat on the 2021 Vintage:
"On paper, 2021 reads as a cooler  year, but our vines couldn’t have been happier. With warm days calmly weaving throughout the crisp season, our vines would say it wasn’t too hot or cold, but just right. Harvest commenced in early April after a useful warm spell over Easter, which saw the delivery of powerfully rich yet restrained fruit. In summary, it was a dream growing year that we liken to 2012, one of our best."

Curly Flat 2021 Chardonnay
RRP: $64 | Offer: $51!

"Curly Flat delivers the goods. There’s nothing wan about this release, it has body and it has flavour and it probably even has soul. Pristine peach, nectarine and citrus flavours are served hand-in-glove with cedarwood oak. There’s more than a little texture here, silken and grippy at once. There’s a smoked wheat character here too, perhaps even some crushed fennel, though in reality it presents as one seamless gorgeous lipsmacking whole. Super gear." 95+pts! - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Curly Flat 2021 Pinot Noir
RRP: $76 | Offer: $62!

"Most of the better Macedon Ranges pinot noirs are ever-so surly in their youth. This one too. The fruit here is backward, in a good way. It tastes of red cherry and plum with an earthen, sweet-sour edge, though bunches of twig, juniper and general herb notes are at play too, if in an integrated way. Complexity, it certainly has covered. There’s excellent tannin here, a solid-if-fine-grained frame, though it’s not delivered at the expense of flow. This moves along in a brooding, thoughtful way, as if concerned about its future, not that it needs to be. Everything, for this wine, in time, will be just fine." 94+pts! - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Silent Way 2022 Pinot Noir
RRP: $32 | Offer: $28!
In 6-Packs: $25!

The tenth vintage of Silent Way pinot from the Quarry Ridge vineyard just outside the dotted line for the Macedon region and near Kilmore. As James Suckling points out, the only thing that separates this and other pinots of the region twice the price (or more!) is a layer of spicy new oak, which this wine frankly does not require. With rich, intense red fruits/dark cherries, precise tannin, and a forest-floor complexity - pinot purity is on show here.

Silent Way 2022 Shiraz Malbec
RRP: $32 | Offer: $28!
In 6-Packs: $25!

Shiraz and a little malbec from Glenhope in the north of the Macedon region. These are great and mature vines, and this is a well-favoured vineyard in the eyes of Matt Harrop, Michael Dhillon and other savvy vignerons. Matt says it's no secret that he loves Birk's Wendouree Cab/Malbec, so I thought I'd do a blend. "I fermented it simply and without any tricks, then aged it without any new oak and put in the bottle with less than a year in barrel. I wanted to preserve all the fruit and natural character and purity." This is not a light confectionary-flavoured wine, but it's rather more serious with lovely aromas, complex nuances, deep, honest flavours with balanced silky tannins and a superb juicy finish.
