2024 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir

The Bass Phillip range has gone from strength to strength, with great reliability and wines that have not just power, but a sexy, silky enrapturing and ethereal nature. They also have a slightly tightly wound style and a more apparent youthfulness than the previous regime; wines that beg for cellaring against my strong desire get stuck in to them now! Cheers, Randall.

"[..] Painstaking site selection, ultra-close vine spacing and the very cool climate of South Gippsland are the keys to the magic of Bass Phillip and its eerily Burgundian pinots. One of Australia’s greatest small producers, it's been heading down a new path since Jones sold the assets (winery, stock and 14ha of vineyards) in May '20 to a syndicate led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier (who has known Jones for 14 years)." "[..] These are exciting wines that further lift the already established reputation of this domaine. While I baulk at nominating anyone as Australia’s best pinot noir producer, I would not argue with those who claim that mantle for Bass Phillip." HUON HOOKE

2024 Estate Pinot Noir
Offer: $110

While the 2023 season was characterized by a swifter ripening process, 2024 was a year of patience. The cooler temperatures allowed for an extended "hang time," with harvest concluding on March 27th. This gradual, even ripening has endowed the 2024 wines with a level of flavour complexity and aromatic precision that is truly distinctive. Our Chardonnays show a modest and welcome increase in volume and focus, while the Pinot Noirs possess the deep concentration and structural "spine" that ensure they will evolve magnificently in the cellar for years to come. In summary, 2024 is a vintage of balance and power—a testament to the slow, cool ripening that makes Bass Phillip one of the world's most unique sites for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

"An elegant style, almost gentle with every element from fruit and acidity to tannins neatly in place. It’s a complete wine. Red cherry accents, rose petals, charred radicchio and a host of spices for good measure. It continues to unfurl beautifully in the glass. As seamless as it gets thanks to superfine tannins and a powder puff of acidity." 95 Pts. - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

2023 'Depuis' Pinot Noir - Only 2 Bottles
Offer: $515
A bold new style introduced in 2023 by the new Fourrier-led team, showcasing a 100% whole bunch approach - this was the first vintage and an iconic, rare bottling! "Vigneron Jean-Marie Fourrier destems pinot at his Burgundian domaine and at Bass Phillip, in order to preserve flavour and freshness. Not surprising given he was a protégé of the late, great Henri Jayer, who did the same. So, here it is – Depuis 23, which means 'since' in French (as in this style started in ‘23). Fermented with 100% whole bunches and aged in French oak, 50% new, for 14 months. Given all that, weaker sites would produce something weedy and astringent. Not this. Sure, it’s stemmy with bitter herbs, but it’s also superbly integrated because at its heart is excellent fruit, all sweet and tangy. A little smokiness comes through, aniseed, almost pastis-like, umami/Vegemite and oak spices with raw silk tannins sashaying across the fuller-bodied palate. There’s a density and richness but it’s not weighty. Whole-bunch junkies will be stoked." 96 Pts. - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion

Special Offer
2024 Dom. de l'Aste Santenay Blanc 1er Cru Beaurepaire
$115 | Offer: $99
This is super tight and deeply concentrated. It has struck-rock mineral and savoury reduction; some real Corton Charlamange-like minerality and structure. After a very quick settling the juice (still with a high “baub” (suspended lees) content is allowed to start fermenting naturally in tank, then quickly transferred to 350lt barrels, 20% new. This is classy, fairly tightly coiled but morish and mouth-watering. A 2013 of this was opened and it showed well. Great proof that this can age well also. Cheers, Randall.
