Mother's Day Champagne Super Specials
Shadows of Krug from a great grower / domaine champagne, Gonet-Medeville.
This is a 10 ha domaine with only 1er Cru and Grand Cru sites. The bedrock of the estate is 5ha of 1er Cru Bisseuil which ajoins the famous village of Ay (Grand Cru). Xavier Gonet has policies of judicious barrel-fermentation, no chaptalisation, no fining, no filtration and no malo. The result is a fine palate to marvel, full of vinous character, incredible complexity, and great class alike.
NV Champagne 1er Cru 'Cuvee Tradition'
$118 | $84
$
80% 2021, with 20% reserve wines. Bottled in 04/22 and disgorged 10/24 then given 6 months cork age before shipping. It's has a well balanced and dryish 4 g/l dosage.
"..showing very well, bursting from the glass with an expressive bouquet of crisp yellow orchard fruit, honeycomb, dried citrus rind, walnuts and fresh brioche. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and fleshy, with ripe but racy acids, fine depth at the core and a long, sapid finish. This is a complex Champagne that sees some barrel fermentation." 92 Points - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
NV Champagne 1er Cru 'Blanc de Noirs'
$140 | $95
$
This release is 80% from 2021, with 20% reserve wine. It's usually pale rose in colour as it's all pinot noir. The strawberry and red fruit pushes through the yeasty, mineral lased palate.
"The new release of Gonet-Medeville's NV Brut Premier Cru Blanc de Noirs is showing very well, offering up an appealing bouquet of crisp golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, warm biscuits and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and vinous, with ripe but racy acids, good depth at the core and a delicate mousse. Concentrated and structured, another year on the cork will be rewarded by additional complexity, even though this is approachable now."

2008 Alfred Gratien Cuvée Paradis Brut Rosé
$350 | $239
$
This is a thoroughbred Champagne in its origins and in its expression.
Champagne Alfred Gratien has always reminded me of Krug in some ways, and in particular a visit to Krug many years ago. Catherine Seydoux, one of the Krug family, said that Gratien was similar to Krug in many ways, not the least of which is the total barrel-fermentation in the 1000 old 228lt barrels, no MLF and long ageing in bottle. This is a deep, powerful and serious “Prestige Cuvée” with nice age and a long way still to go. Cheers, Randall.
"The 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Paradis, a blend of 63% Chardonnay and 37% Pinot Noir from premiers and grands crus, was vinified in small oak barrels without malolactic fermentation and spent 13 years on lees. Subtle cream and caramel-dipped rye bread notes with an overtone of cherry express themselves on the exquisitely youthful nose. The palate offers beautifully salty rye sourdough depth and texture, creamy yet taut, with an absolutely fine mousse that foams away with tiny, insistent bubbles lending vivacity and creaminess. This immensely gastronomic Rosé boasts lasting length, real cut and superb freshness." 95 Points - Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous
