2024 Domaine Razal Syrah/Shiraz

Made by Matt Harrop at the old Virgin Hills winery. This red proudly displays a vibrant youthful colour, subtle florals, crushed ripe blueberry and red berry fruit, hints of peppery spice-box, dark cherry and it has absolutely swallowed all of the 30% new oak used in its maturation. It is from the old ’68 plantings and it shows the old-vine depth and graceful power. This is coolish-climate shiraz, even though it can easily be enjoyed now, it has inherent ageability, and decades should not trouble it. - Cheers, Randall

2020 Brovia Anterse Metodo Classico Extra Brut$157 | Offer: $124
This name comes from the rhythmic, interlocking nature of the warp and the weft threads in cloth. A reference to the complex interplay of the white juices from barbera, nebbiolo and freisa grapes, and bottle ageing on lees for over 4 years. The barbera (60%) is grown at a very high altitude so can be picked fully flavour ripe and still with excellent acidity. It's finished with just 2gm/lt of dosage.

As always, the Brovia Barolo is built on a core of younger-vine fruit from Brea (about 70%) plus juice from the vineyard-designates that is left over after those casks are filled.”

This formidable cru (also referred to as “Fiasco” in our imported Azelia wines!) is in Castiglione Falletto on south facing slopes at over 250mts on limestone soils. The site is 0.7 hectare with vines planted in 1970 and 1979.
"Palish, youthful ruby. Immediately spicy and stony on the nose, while the fruit slowly emerges, showing a fantastic perfume of raspberry and cranberry. From the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, this is a one-hectare vineyard planted to Nebbiolo in 1955. The exposure is southeast and the altitude is 350mts.

A 1.5 hectare vineyard in this "grand cru" of Barolo faces southwest at an altitude of 340mts above sea level. The vines were planted in 1961.
"... a tight, reticent wine, as Barolos from this site often are. Spice box, dried flowers, mint and plum begin to emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This firm, classically austere Barolo feels rather shut down following its bottling. The Villero is always the hardest wine at Brovia to taste young. Even so, it oozes classicism. All readers need is a measure of patience.”

2021 Barolo 'Rocche di Castiglione'$396 | Offer: $316
The famous “Rocche,” in Castiglione Falletto expresses the elegant, "feminine" side of Barolo, and is always the most aromatic and sensual of the crus from Brovia. The sandy soil composition is in stark contrast to the soil which underlies its neighbours in Castiglione Falletto. The Brovia parcel (1.5 hectares) of this vineyard faces southeast and sits at 350mts above sea level with its vines planted in 1966.
"... a classic Brovia wine from this site. Aromatic, sculpted and vibrant in the glass, the 2021 has so much to offer. Crushed flowers, vibrant red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are all beautifully lifted. There's gorgeous inner sweetness that emerges over time. Silky, beautifully ripe tannins pull it all together on the closer. As always, Rocche is the most charming and sensual of the Barolos in this range. If I had to pick just one wine to encapsulate what Brovia is all about, the Rocche di Castiglione would be it. Superb.”
