Chateau de Pommard, Pommard 2011 - 15 yo!

“These are powerful and punchy wines…(and the domaine can make) a wine of extraordinary depth and generosity that fights well above its official villages Pommard appellation.” Jasper MMorris, Inside Burgundy.

This is from the mysterious Chateau de Pommard, a semi-mature burgundy, from 30yo vines on average, made with 30% new barrels, designed to last and released with the historic and lovely old label for some reason.

A wine that introduced me to the lovely, enticing and ethereal perfume and sexy richness of maturing burgundy was the 1972 Chateau de Pommard. Stuart Hooper, founder of Bannockburn, loved that wine and bought a pallet for his own cellar! I got to be the beneficiary of many bottles when it was around 15yo.  By coincidence, this 2011 here is also 15yo!

This estate is large, over 17ha in one stone-walled clos, and old (1726). The reputation it has, is for big, structured, long-lasting wines that are generously flavoured, very sound and that develop perfume and nuance over time.

"Here the wood treatment is more subtle though hardly invisible as it more easily allows the ripe and fresh red currant, earth and pretty floral aromas that display a whisper of secondary development to be appreciated. The supple, rich and attractively textured flavors possess good power on the lengthy if slightly warm finale. This still needs a few years but unlike the other vintages in the range, this is not so far away from its peak that it couldn't be enjoyed soon. This is really quite good in the context of the vintage."

“… quite pretty red cherry, currant and raspberry are still visible. The lush, opulent and impressively rich broad-shouldered flavors are also supported by a very firm tannic spine on the balanced and strikingly long finish. As I have observed several times, this possesses fine quality, and particularly so for the vintage."

«A precise, succulent and well-crafted white, showing stone fruit, lemon zest and aromatic herbs. Medium-bodied with silky texture. Balanced, crunchy and seductive. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. »

«Château Thivin Beaujolais Blanc Clos de Rochebonne Monopole 2024 – 13% / This beautiful Chardonnay marries a wonderful textural richness and delicate hazelnut character with an animating candied citrus peel freshness. Everything fits together so beautifully. Very long creamy finish. From a site over 500 meters above sea level with clay-limestone soil in the Pierres Dorées sub-region. The best ever vintage of this wine! 94 (SP)»
