Two Grand Crus of Brunello - "Don't Miss" Vintage - 2019 Costanti & Fuligni

Filter
If you were to visit Montalcino with carte blanche to visit any producer of your choice, but you only had one day; two of the four producers you would have to visit are these two; this is my firm opinion. The others would be Soldera and Biondi Santi. When I visited Fuligni and Costanti families, I wasn't quite expecting to feel the pervasive air of "patience and perfectionism" and the atmosphere of timeless trust in the land and the grapes, with the custodians burning desire to nurture them both. Both producers have an air of "DRC" about them. Add the wonderful 2019 vintage, and you have a pair of "must-have" wines. The smell of the tasting room at Fuligni was sweet with subtle incense-like antique furniture, lavander, a sweet mossy dampness and the "angles share" (vapours of evaporated wine from the barrels); a bit like the aromas of these wines!
    Cheers, Randall.
"There is a lot of momentum behind Fuligni, and the wines keep getting better. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino presented this year is a stellar example. This estate has vines in the cool north-eastern quadrant of the appellation with elevations that range from 380 and 450 meters above sea level." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
"The 2019 (Costanti) Brunello di Montalcino is impossible to ignore. This is a vintage of radiance and appeal without any sensation of over-ripeness or lack of complexity. The wines are aromatically intense and full of dimension, with translucent color, fruit typicity and the ability to communicate a sense of place. They are structured and built for cellaring, often showing their best after being open for over two days in bottle. The terms classic, racy, cool-toned, crunchy and sleek litter my tasting notes, and while many 2019s display an inviting personality today, they are balanced for the cellar and sure to mature beautifully over the next ten to fifteen years, if not more. This is the vintage we’ve all been waiting for. " Eric Guido on the spectacular 2019 vintage, vinous.com.
