Henri Prudhon

Saint Aubin has come of age, the slightly cooler neighbour of Puligny and Chassagne has enjoyed the recent warmer vintages. It has been “discovered” by wine lovers of the world who realise that the wines can be as good as its more illustrious neighbours and they are often slightly cheaper. This 1er Cru St. Aubin plot is a sloping site of approximately 0.65 ha and it looks down to the hamlet called Gamay. The vineyard with a nice warm southwest exposition is a mix of 20 year old and 60 year old vines. The 20% new oak doesn't show! The single site aligote "Tilleuil" is a benchmark style for the "better" dore (golden) variety and is super dense and gorgeous. Martot and Latour G wines are limited and superb! - Best wishes, Randall

Henri Prudhon 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru 'Sur Gamay' Blanc
RRP: $165 | Offer: $95!

"Vincent Prudhon succinctly described the 2019 growing season as "we were down fully 40% relative to a normal crop. The fruit was at least extremely clean and quite ripe so there was very little sorting required....they're ripe but fresher than the 2018s with even better terroir transparency."
"... there is more energy and almost painful intensity to the beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that exude a bracing salinity on the bitter lemon inflected and very dry finish that exhibits impressive persistence. One to consider." 91pts - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Chevrot & Fils

Incredibe Old-Vine Aligote
Today, Domaine Chevrot owns 18.5 hectare of vines; 50% pinot noir, 40% chardonnay, and ten percent aligoté in appellations of Maranges, Santenay, and the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. Its oldest plots were planted by the current winemakers’ grandfather and are up to 75 years old. Organic since 2008 and owning 2 horses the family are careful and caring in with the vineyards.- Randall

Chevrot & Fils 2020 Bourgogne Aligote 'Cuvee des Quatre Terroirs'
RRP: $70 | Offer: $49!

This aligoté comes from four parcels ("quatre terroirs") planted in 1970 and 1984. The sandstone gives a smoky characteristic to the wine which many mistake as oak - but this wine is made in entirely in stainless steel. There are two main types of aligoté, aligoté doré and aligoté vert. Doré is the older of the two and is richer and deeper, but crops at lower levels.
"In bottle, having been vinified and aged in stainless steel. Pale colour, light fresh tangy nose, agreeable. A drier style which stretches out nicely to a long finish. Classical in its way." - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Chevrot & Fils 2020 Bourgogne Aligote 'Tilleuil'
RRP: $90 | Offer: $59!

Aged in old French oak barrels for 12 months, the Tilleul aligote is treated in the same way a typical premier cru white Burgundy would be. You can really taste the old, pre-clonal aligoté doré variety (as opposed to the high-yielding modern clonal aligoté vert) here - power, finesse, and a lovely honeyed richness which is supported gently by the old oak.
"Fine pure lemon yellow. this has a magical bouquet, really high class, showing the finesse side of Aligoté. Mostly made in foudre. Very clean, very pure, very long with some lime notes to finish. A star of the new league of Aligoté!" 5 Star Wine! - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Thierry & Pascale Matrot - Meursault

Elsa and Adèle took the reins of the estate in 2016 from father Thierry. They work attentivly in the vineyards as the first step in preserving their precise plots' characteristics. The family moved to organic fertilisers upon his arrival on the scene in 1976, when Thierry and his father adopted a lutte raisonnée approach to the vines. The rational progression from here was full organic viticulture across all the vineyards of Domaine Matrot from the year 2000. In my experience these wines are some of the best in Meursault and age well. - Randall.

Matrot 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir - Screw Cap
RRP: $75 | Offer: $67!

Beautifully deep and vibrantly youthful, rich and sweet-fruited. "The 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has been racked two weeks ago into tank. Brambly red berry fruit that is well defined unfolds from the glass. The palate is well balanced, the 10% new oak neatly integrated with a fresh, zippy finish. What more do you want from a Bourgogne Rouge?" 87-89pts - Neal Martin, Vinous

Matrot 2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay- Screw Cap
RRP: $71 | Offer: $64!

This ages well for a Bourgogne blanc!"Fewer purchased grapes now as they have bought a one hectare Clos in the hamlet of Borgy, by Dezize-les-Maranges. Clear fresh pale colour with a racy nose, beautiful purity of fruit, not especially deep, but very attractive." 87pts - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Matrot 2020 Meursault
RRP: $180 | Offer: $162! Limited

"Pale colour with a light lime tint. No new wood from here on. Some apple but also fresh pears here, a pleasing but not excessive ripeness. Gorgeous fruit on the second half of the palate, a rounded Meursault still with a fresh thread through the middle." 90-93pts - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Domaine Latour-Giraud Meursault

Jean-Pierre Latour said, " I believe that 2020 is an exceptional vintage as the balance is perfect, indeed they remind me quite a bit of my 2014s, another vintage that is exceptional."

"Latour is entirely justified to call the results he obtained exceptional as his 2020s are outstanding, indeed it's the best vintage I have seen from him since 2014. These are wines to search out as the quality is phenomenal and every wine in the range is highly recommended." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Latour-Giraud 2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay
RRP: $81 | Offer: $73!

"In Les Vaux. Fullish mid yellow, plenty of stuffing on the nose including a good feel of lees contact. This packs a real punch in a good way, with a fresh vigour to the lemon and greengage fruit, good acidity and decent length for this level. Definitely a mini-Meursault, with extra vivacity." 87-89pts - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Latour-Giraud 2020 Meursault 'Cuvee Charles Maxime'
RRP: $165 | Offer: $149!

"This makes quite an overview of Meursault with plots in Pelles (3), Limozin, Crotots, Vireuils (2), Chevalières, Clos du Cromin and Corbins. Pale lemon and lime, this is quite light on its feet up front yet with a stunning intensity behind, with a citrus intensity of acidity as well. It will doubtless flesh out with three to five years in bottle. Very promising." 91-95pts, 5-star wine! - Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Latour-Giraud 2020 Meursault-Charmes 1er Cru
RRP: $289 | Offer: $259!

"Two six ouvrée plots top and bottom. Mid yellow, the bouquet is a little softer and the oak has a vanilla touch rather than toasty. Starts reasonably quietly but kicks on with real force behind, and then finishes on the lime-citrus acidity of the vintage, suggesting a lightly salted Rose’s lime juice." 92-95pts, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Roux Pere & Fils

Sometimes estates making great Burgundies are hiding in plain sight. Roux Pere et Fils, at least for me, fits into this category. Each and every wine that I have tasted is not only vibrant and deeply flavoured, but really complex, savory and enticing!

My earlier notes, "Last week I tasted my first Roux; the St. Aubin “Jadis” 1er Cru 2020, a wine aged in amphora for 20 months and a great 1er Cru of immense quality and complexity; and a totally great surprise! This week I tasted the Meursault Grands Charrons 2020, a site that always impresses me and one next to the famed Les Rougeots. It too, is a very impressive young wine, full, beautifully textured, dense but not fat, and tightly coiled. It gives immense pleasure.

Roux Pere & Fils is an impressive operation that started in 1885 with 4 ha is Saint Aubin. Now the 70 ha (with 30 full-time plus seasonal vineyard workers) is run by Mathieu and Sébastien Roux and they have a large modern winery on the Route National just below the village of St. Aubin; overlooking Chassagne Montrachet. The brothers also buy in fruit grown by vignerons that they trust to do a great job, but this now only accounts for less than a 1/3 of the production, whereas in the past it was more. The vineyards are farmed in a sustainable way and are under the process of organic certification. - Randall

Roux Pere & Fils 2020 Rully Blanc 'Les Agnieres'
RRP: $78 | Offer: $66!

"100% Chardonnay. Aged 12–14 months in barrel. Dom Roux is based in St-Aubin with Matthieu Roux the fifth-generation winemaker. Plush, ripe and weighty, there is a fine mineral line which keeps the palate lifted and fresh. Zesty lime and a hint of tropicality on the palate. Plenty going on – very good modern style of Rully." 16+pts, Andy Howard MW, jancisrobinson.com

Roux Pere & Fils 2020 Saint-Aubin Blanc 'Champtirant'
RRP: $110 | Offer: $89!

This is a single site village wine from a plot in Champ Tirant which is just downslope from 1er Cru Les Castets and the more famous derriere Chez Edouard, It's a rocky site, S-E facing at 320mt, a great position! This wine exemplifies the high and "cool" (the same height as the top of Chassagne 1er Crus) but powerful and ripe character of great St. Aubin. The price is right, the intensity is impressive, the oak is well-judged, the density and richness are balanced with beautiful and seamless acidity; and the flavours of grapefruit, preserved lemon, pineapple, oatmeal biscuits and doughy yeast lees-ageing characters are long and classy. What more could you want for under $90?

Roux Pere & Fils 2020 Meursault 'Les Grands Charrons'
RRP: $220 | Offer: $189!

"Lemon cream and creamy sandalwood on the nose. Toasted oatmeal porridge, summer-honey golds, bright lemongrass greens, walnut savoury; mouth-wateringly tight crunchy greengage and wild vineyard stone fruit. A wine with coruscating energy and glistering raciness. Lustre. Focused, comet-like intensity, without losing the woven weight of Meursault. An explosion of peppery molle fragrance and heat on the finish. Re-tasted 10 days after it had been opened, the wine was still electric with life and freshness, and it had developed an almost heady perfume of honeysuckle and jasmine, not only on the nose but filling the palate as well. The fruit seemed to have even more lustre. Quite spell-binding." 17.5pts - Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com

Roux Pere & Fils 2020 Santenay 1er Cru 'Beaurepaire' Rouge
RRP: $110 | Offer: $89!

"Turkish delight and sour cherry on the nose ribbon through to sharp strawberries, vanilla-and-cedar spices, and muscular, if slim, tannins on the palate. There is a sense of gentle yoga-like control and flow to the tannins. The ripeness of the fruit – on the cusp of red and black – is on the cusp of sharp to ripe; liminal. Tinged with the bitter crush of fresh-green aromatic leaves. I would not resist a glass or three of this." 16pts - Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com
