Wagner-Stempel 2022 Riesling Dry
RRP: $46 | Offer: $39
Most German winemakers that I visited this year were in love with their 2022's. The opulence and exotic, ripe, slightly wild nature of the wines has captivated them. When Daniel Wagner poured a taste of this he had a glint in his eye, I said it has a ripe, wild reductive character at the moment; will that go? He said, with a wry smile, I hope not! It's a beautiful opulent wine, a little yeasty / warm dough character, honey wax melds with classic lemon and lemongrass riesling fruit. It's delicious, complex, deep and quite full-flavoured.
Wagner-Stempel 2021 Riesling Porphyr
RRP: $75 | Offer: $59
Wow, what a wine this is, with 20% barrel fermentation and ageing introduced to give more richness and complexity. Ripe peach, spiced pear, intense granite minerality and hints of dough and just ripe apricot harmonise and sing.
"Very bright nose of white peach and lemon zest, together with delicate notes of wild flowers and herbs. Sleek and elegant, but with stacks of stone fruit and citrus and a compact core, this has a wonderful interplay of hardcore minerality and juicy fruit. Very long, ripe and firm finish. From organically grown grapes." 94pts - James Suckling
Wagner-Stempel 2021 Riesling GG Hollberg
RRP: $129 | Offer: $109
"Amazing in '21" says Daniel, "powerful, 13% alc. and 8gms of acidity (10.5gms at harvest!)so I used 50% barrel and I'm so happy."
"An explosion of peach, apricot, mandarin orange and flint. Stunning concentration of ripe fruit and beautifully supported by super-fine tannins and super-sensual, mineral acidity that propels the extremely intense and long crushed-stone finish. From organically grown grapes." 97pts! - James Suckling
Wagner-Stempel 2021 Riesling GG Heerkretz
RRP: $165 | Offer: $139
How are these comments from Daniel Wagner! "Amazing crop, picture-book, end of Oct. harvest, high acid, high sugar, high extract; perfect. It's a little bit crazy, one of the most crystalline ever, but not sharp." In line with his recent form, he has used 80% steel to increase the tension, elegance and possibly ageability. The wine has enough inherent complexity and completeness so it doesn't need more barrel fermentation and ageing than 20%.
"As delicate as a bunch of chamomile, yet as focused and powerful as a laser beam, this is a super-cool and mineral dry riesling that packs enormous depth into a sleek silhouette. Still extremely young and just beginning to show its real class. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024." 96pts! - James Suckling
Wagner-Stempel 2021 Riesling EMT
RRP: $645 | Offer: $549
Named after Annalise Emt, who sold this old patch of vines to Daniel, but was regularly found helping in the vines even after the sale. She died 10 years ago. This is the best bunches from the best vines in the 1.5ha plot making just one tiny tank. "Pure mineral" says Daniel.
It's exceptionally long and is the purest expression of the great Heerkretz grand cru.
"A giant dry riesling with great ripeness, wet-stone vibrancy and flinty mystery. So much lime, pomelo and star-fruit character! Enormous concentration on the palate, where there’s also Asian-pear and pineapple sweetness (although this is analytically bone-dry). Amazingly long and complete finish. Limited production. From organically grown grapes." 98pts! - James Suckling
