97 points - Jane Faulkner, Wine Companion "What an excellent start to the ’23 pinots at Bass Phillip with the first tier, the Estate, showcasing gorgeous fruit flavours and a high level of detail. There’s an energy and vitality, too, alongside sweet black cherries, kirsch and aniseed with fresh herbs to the fore. It's obviously still very much primary yet compelling nonetheless. Fuller bodied, there’s a succulence across the palate that is caressed by fine tannins and bright acidity. A bit of a showstopper."
"Phillip Jones handcrafted tiny quantities of superlative pinot noir which, at its best, had no equal in Australia. Painstaking site selection, ultra-close vine spacing and the very cool climate of South Gippsland are the keys to the magic of Bass Phillip and its eerily Burgundian pinots. One of Australia’s greatest small producers, it's been heading down a new path since Jones sold the assets (winery, stock and 14ha of vineyards) in May '20 to a syndicate led by Burgundian winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier (who has known Jones for 14 years)." JAMES HALLIDAY
"[..] These are exciting wines that further lift the already established reputation of this domaine. While I baulk at nominating anyone as Australia’s best pinot noir producer, I would not argue with those who claim that mantle for Bass Phillip." HUON HOOKE
"Imagine you were asked to select a Dream Team of Australian wines - a case of modern classics to show some international wine-lovers the best that this country can produce. Which wines would you choose? I’d rather field a collection of single-region, single-vineyard wines that taste more of where they’re from than how they’ve been made. The only pinot noir in the list is Bass Phillip Premium." MAX ALLEN
