This seems at first to be expensive rose, but it's an amazing wine that blew us away. A rose with guts but also with perfume, red fruit juicyness, a little savory grip, and a refreshing fruity energy. It's got a fragrant nose of wild strawberries, redcurrants, rosehip and a faint herbal earthiness. On the palate, a textured blend of raspberry, cranberry and citrus zest, with fine acidity and a gentle lees-derived creaminess. Smoky, spicy, and impressively long, with a balance of freshness and grip.
A traditional "clarete" (meaning a light infusion with crushed crapes) from Canalejas de Peñafiel, made from seven co-fermented red and white varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha, Albillo and Monastrell. Foot-trodden, basket-pressed and aged seven months on lees in barrel. Just 2,280 bottles made. A beautifully crafted, quietly complex wine.
