The grapes for this wine come from plots containing slate and also some quartzite. The vineyards are oriented south to southwest with a slope of up to 40%, so the sunlight can be described as ideal. Thanks to the good ventilation, especially in the plots on the upper slopes that are more open to wind, the grapes stay healthy for a long time.
The soils are often shallow to medium deep and can be heated very easily. The slate absorbs the warming rays of the sun during the day and releases them back to the vines at night.
In times of global warming, the higher vineyards benefit from their poor, rock-rich soils and their exposure and slope with an ideal microclimate and longer hanging times.
