The classic range (village if you follow Marco de Grazia’s Burgundian leanings) Etna Rosso shows the benefits of that time. Aged for 16 months in 30-hectolite oak botti, the 2022 is looking spritely and delicious. The volcanic nature and warmth shine through, balancing each other out like old friends. The wine leaps out of the glass with crushed rock mineral notes accenting by almost confected red berries and lifted blood orange. This evocative and aromatic introduction is backed up on the palate with pretty red fruits that are both chalky and juicy, as Mascalese can be. Marco’s tannins are more an extension of that crushed rock minerality, fine and grainy and the perfect balance to Etna’s warmer fruit. The acidity is refreshing, making the wine an example of sapidity that makes you scream for food – or more wine!
