This wine comes from vines that have NEVER been sprayed with any chemical treatments, not even “organic” copper or sulphur!
The site is planted with (thick-skinned I presume) disease-resistant grape varieties, bred over decades to live, ripen and provide healthy fruit without any of the afore-mentioned treatments.
This deeply coloured red comes from the “exceedingly well-known” (not) varieties of prior 50%, chambourcin 40% and souvignier gris 10%. Sonja’s has this certified “Piwi” (www.piwi-international.de www.piwifrance.com) and it is a wine made from zero chemically-treated vines and fruit. The entire bunches are fermented in large oak vats for 7 days, then the wine is aged in older barriques for around 9 months. A small amount of SO2 is added so the family aren’t sending ticking time-bombs to their clients. Because of the “cutting-edge” cepage, it has to bear the cross of “Vin de France”, but it has a sense of nobility under that image.
As Sonja says so accurately, “It’s a very deep red wine with purplish nuances. A nose of black fruits blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrant and a hint of pepper. A spicy and juicy palate with satiny tannins and a succulent finish.” I couldn’t write a better note myself! I even feel that it will age for a decade or two if that’s you want, but it’s not proven like the other Thivin wines.
