2022 Joseph Roty, Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Tres Vieilles Vignes 750ml Bottle
Regular price $1,110.00'Three plots, all with ancient vines. Pretty dark in its purple colour. A suggestion of succulence on the nose and an explosion of dense fruit on the palate. This has so much to give and it is already giving it, despite the extraction, the tannins and its youth. Several times more concentration in the mouth than either of the others with an extraordinary depth of finish.' 96-99 points - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes is terrific, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries and dark berries mingled with notions of licorice, violets, rose petals and spices. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's concentrated and multidimensional, with the most body and incipient complexity of any wine in the range, concluding with a long, expansive finish. Tasting with affable 11-generation vigneron Pierre-Jean Roty—who took the helm at this discrete family-owned domaine following his brother's untimely passing in 2015—is an annual pleasure that I always eagerly anticipate. This year, we looked at the 2022s from bottle, a more dense and structured vintage than the 2021s, and one that's clearly built for the cellar. Roty fans will be familiar with the approach at this address: assiduously but only shallowly cultivated soils, a high proportion of old vines, minimal use of chemical treatments, destemmed grapes fermented in concrete tanks and élevage in generous percentages of toasty new oak for 15-16 months'

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru clearly has the most intense bouquet, with hints of black cherry, briar, boysenberry and blood orange. The palate is structured and powerful. The new oak (100%) is a little more evident compared to Roty's other Grand Crus, and at the moment, this defines the dark chocolate-tinged finish. Patience will certainly be required.' 95 points - Neal Martin, Vinous
Note: from a .16 ha holding of 3 parcels in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that those that have died over the years have been replanted. Moderate oak and a hint of menthol influence is present on the attractively fresh and exuberantly spicy nose of dark raspberry liqueur, sauvage and earth scents. As is almost always the case, there is good muscle and excellent punch to the lightly mineral-inflected large-bodied flavors that possess focused power on the tightly wound and overtly structured finish where the wood influence reflected by the nose reappears. This is often the class of the Roty range though in 2022 the Griotte will give it a run for its money though time will of course be the ultimate arbiter.' 94 points - Allen Meadows, Burghound
