Praised by Jane Anson in her new weighty tome 'Bordeaux' 2021 as a Chateau to watch! Organic, very low yields, deep and profound classic Graves reds with a hint of rust / iodine and dark fruits. Situated slightly north of Langon in the south of Graves, the Château Respide-Médeville vineyards date back to the 18th century. They were acquired by Christian Médeville in 1980 and he was the famous owner of Ch. Gilette Sauternes and Ch. Les Justices for several generations, and gained a reputation of being a perfectionist in every aspect of his work. He was nicknamed "the antique dealer of Sauternes", due to the very late release (with ageing in vats for over 20 years!) of his Gilette Sauternes.
The Respide-Medeville estate is organic, 15 ha and has terroir of gravelly clay in an amphitheatre shaped site, sloping down towards the river. It’s planted with 60% cabernet and 40% merlot for the reds which see 50% barrel ageing and 50% large vat for 20 months. Only 3500 cases are made, an equivalent of only 2.6 tonnes / acre, very low, in fact lower than most Grand Cru sites!
The Dames is, not surprisingly, from younger vines and is a little lighter, brighter but very fragrant and pleasing. It’s classic cabernet with cassis and pencil shavings, quite dark, silky and substantial.
