This Burgundy village that has less than 200ha under vine, has a mix of mostly pinot with a little of the ancient cesár grape used for its deep colour and richness. Irancy when in the hands of masters like Bersan or Dauvissat is an intellectually stimulating, delicious and age-worthy red. The steep slopes have plenty of Kimmeridgian chalk in the soil and sub-soil, and it’s a cooler area than most of the Cote d’or. In these wines, César is far less than the 10% maximum allowable amount, and some whole-bunch is used with the pinot.
The “Cuvée Louis” is from 70yo vines planted on clay and limestone soils in 0.7 hectares of the Vodon lieu dit. The grapes are hand harvested, undergo spontaneous fermentation between 8-10 days and all-up 3 weeks on skins, then 12 months in 228L oak barrels and four months stainless steel tanks with no filtration.
“From old vines planted by Jean-Christophe’s grandfather. All in wood, two thirds 600 litres, 8% new wood, with 12 months in wood then six months in tank. Deliberately the most Bourguignon in style. 5 Star wine (One of Jasper’s picks) 90 points.” - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
