100% Chardonnay, grown on the single-site estate vineyard, in Pokolbin, Lower Hunter Valley. The Chardonnay vines are grown on the flat southern edge of the estate, on white loamy clay. The elevation is 50-100 metres. It is hand-picked early in the morning, and chilled before crushing & de-stemming, followed by part-fermentation in tank, before completing the second part of fermentation in new, one year-old, and two-year-old small, French oak (225L barriques). Lees stirring every week for 6 months, before bottling (which gives the textural element that is quite unique to Lake Folly’s Chardonnay.) No use of malolactic fermentation.
During 2022, we were presented with the challenges of La Niña, which delivered some late harvest rainfall. Chardonnay, however, is a remarkably resilient grape and it never ceases to amaze us that, often, the best vintages of Lake’s Folly Chardonnay come from these more challenging seasons - perhaps, in part, due to better natural acid retention from the cooler harvest period. Suffice to say, the 2022 Chardonnay is outstanding and will also have great cellaring potential for the longer term.
Colour is golden straw. Nose shows lifted fruits of peach, pear juice and citrus, with hints of spice and dried oats. The palate is generous, with the same fruits of peach and pear juice coming through, along with subtle but perfectly-integrated French oak. Elegant, stylish, with great texture, length and persistence.
